Sanity. Of the five hundred, puny children in the orphanage, few people had the trait. You were one of them. Unlike the most others, you still had the ability to imagine a better life - a better world where you had parents to look up to and love you. Everyday, as you squeezed through the squirming bodies of children trying to acquire a morning meal, your mind wandered to depths no one else dared to explore. You became familiar with the universe known as your mind, thriving and frolicking through the meadows of imagination, inspiration, dreams, and more.
You weren't the only one, however.
There was another that had a mind similar to you and he knew of it. Eren Jeager drifted in the empty halls, clutching a small, crumpled piece of parchment in his fingers. Upon the piece of paper was a shaky, inexperienced scrawl.
You are like me.
He stopped by a small wooden door and pushed it open, awaiting the sound of your awaking. You scrambled out of the thin covers to meet him.
For the past week the two of you have been sending notes, reveling in the small bubble the two of you had created. By day, you acted as if neither of you knew each other and by night both of you sought out comfort only five year old children could give each other. It was a small, fragile secret the both of you held in your minds and the pieces of paper that you exchanged.
It seems so surreal; it's like the dreams you want to cling onto forever.
"Thoughts," you murmured, bouncing on your toes. He nodded, closing the door behind him. Eren took out a small candle and lit it with a swipe of a matchstick. The light illuminated the room, casting shadows across the walls.
Every night one of you started with a single, heavy word and every single night the one who speaks it remains silent as the other responds. Tonight was your night; you were the one who spoke the word.
Thoughts; what turbulent desires and fears tumble in your mind?
"Thoughts," you repeated, seating yourself on the cold, wooden floor.
He sat beside you, placing the candle on the ground. You waited, telling yourself to be patient and to let your companion think.
"Armin," He began, sucking in a large amount of air. "Armin has a book."
"What book? What's it about?" You didn't even try to hide your curiosity; you had heard of things called books before.
"It's about a - ," Eren paused, searching for a way to say what he wished to say without causing the mood to become gloomy.
But you knew what he was searching for. You knew and your heart ached.
Family. Everyone takes them for granted.
Your bottom lip trembled and your hands curled into fists. Eren pulled you into a silent embrace and repeated the word over and over again.
"Family, family, family." He pulled you closer. "We'll have a family one day, [Name]. We'll have a family and we'll have nice dinners and a warm house and parents."
Between your choking sobs you managed to whisper a few words. "And we won't be alone."
"No."
I want to have a home like everyone else.
And the two of you stayed in that position until you drifted off and succumbed to your dreams.
Tomorrow night it would be his turn to start the visit with a word. And tomorrow night it would be your turn to respond.
The two of you would forget all about being alone.
