I opened my eyes to find Drake staring at me. His whole body stiffened and his breathing became ragged. He looked at me with sadness in his eyes. He reached out for my hand.

Just then Ruth came into the bathroom with a scowl on her face.

            “Our parents are home.”

Drake pulled his hand back and looked down at it. He turned from me and walked passed Ruth without a word. I could hear his footsteps heading down the hall with every heavy thud. Ruth slammed the door behind her and I was left alone. I wrapped my foot and stumbled into the kitchen where Rebecca was preparing dinner. Her eyes grew wide when she saw me.

“Gabbie, Honey what happened?” She gasped shocked.

I limped into her arms and cried. She held me tightly and began to rub my back. My father came in minutes and stopped shocked as well.

“What’s going on? Gabbie are you all right?” He questioned crossing the room and reaching out for me.

Later on that night Rebecca had come up to my room with tea and a concerned look on her face.

“Rebecca what did I do…what did I ever do to deserve this?” I asked through teary eyes from my bed.

She approached my bed and pulled back the covers. She climbed in beside me and embraced me, holding me against her.

“I had prayed that when you left you would find happiness; that you could forget all the pain that you left here.” She sighed into my hair. “I wanted to believe that it could be that simple.”

“I thought so too, but I couldn’t forget him.” I uttered. “I couldn’t forget about Drake. He was always there…in my heart.”

“I always assumed you would end up with him. When he woke up I thought he would’ve searched for you, but he didn’t remember you.” she exhaled. “Then things changed.”

I hugged Rebecca tighter and closed my eyes.

“Stay with me just a little longer.” I pleaded. “I don’t want to be alone.”

She held both of my hands in hers and smiled. Laying her head down on the pillows she looked over at me.

“I’ll always be here Gabriella. No need to feel alone.”

I woke up from the light of the moon hitting my face through the window curtains. Rebecca snored silently beside me. I pushed the covers back and looked to my nightstand. I opened the top drawer and pulled out an old tattered white envelope. Standing up I shuffled over to the window and pulled back the curtain to get more light.

It was the letter Drake wrote me all those years ago. Flipping it over, I looked at the flap still sealed shut. I never had the courage to open it. I couldn’t, knowing I had left Drake behind. The guilt of abandoning him threatened to swallow my heart. If I read that letter I don’t think I would’ve ever left him. I believed I could regret no more, but I was wrong.
