I awoke when we reached the front door of the house. Ruth was on the porch waiting for us with her arms crossed. She hid her eyes behind a pair of large black diamond studded sunglasses. I pushed away from Drake and stumbled off his back. He reached out to help me, but I pushed him away.

I limped into the house without looking back at Drake or Ruth.

“Is she okay?” Ruth asked feigning concern. “Our parents went out to some place. I have no idea when they’ll be back. So wanna go watch a movie?”

“I think we need to talk.” Drake said to Ruth

I stumbled into the bathroom to find some gauze to wrap my ankle in. My foot was swelling up by the minute.Sitting on the edge of the tub I filled the tub with ice cold water and placed my left foot in and then I placed my other foot in just to be safe. Both my legs broke out in chills. The water was really cold. From the cracked door I could hear Drake and Ruth arguing.

“Why doesn’t your mom know about us?” Drake asked.

“Wait, what are talking about?” She stammered. “When did you visit my mother?”

“That’s not the point. Why doesn’t she know and why does she hate your sister Jocelyn?” Drake asked. “What are you keeping from me?”

            I could hear Ruth sigh.

“I didn’t want to tell my mom because she never approved of who I dated and you’re special to me.” She sighed again. “As for Gabbie and our mom. Well they never quite saw eye to eye and I can’t be blamed for that.”

“I feel like there’s more to it than that Jocelyn. Have you seen the way your mother treats her. She degraded her and your telling me they never quite saw eye to eye? Jocelyn I just wish I could really remember and trust what you’re telling me.”

“Drake…you can trust me,” she scoffed. “I’m your girlfriend!”

“I’m going to check on your sister…we can talk later.” He said angrily.

“Drake…Drake really?” she said. “Err whatever!”

I could hear Drake outside the door before he knocked.

            “Come in,” I said.

“Hey.” He said as he pushed the door open wider.

He walked in, sat on the edge of the tub, and looked into the water at my feet. I swished my feet in the water until he looked away.

            “Are you okay?” Drake asked.

            “I’m fine. It’s only a sprained ankle. I’ve had worse.” I laughed.

“I’m serious Gabriella. You could’ve been badly hurt.”

“Do you really even care or are you just saying that because you care about my sister?”

“What is that supposed to mean? Of course I care. I am human.” He said. “This has nothing to do with your sister.”

“You know what never mind. I don’t want to talk about this.”

            “Why not?” He asked.

“Because the past is the past Drake!” I said angrily.

“I still think we should talk about it.” He said.

“Fine. What is it exactly you want to know? Huh?” I screamed. “Do you want to know why my mom hates me so much? Well that’s easy. She’s always assumed the worst of me because of your girlfriend. She let Ruth do whatever she wanted and blamed everything Ruth did wrong on me! She saw my father in me and because of that she never loved me. She never trusted me. And Ruth…is just like her.”

“Why do you do that? Why do you call Jocelyn, Ruth?” He said brushing his hands through his hair. “And why…why should what your father did change how she felt about you? Why didn’t Jocelyn just tell her mother the truth about what she did?”

I looked at Drake angrily with tears in my eyes.

“I call Jocelyn, Ruth…as my revenge. Mother blamed Ruth for everything. In some way she had to feel the guilt because we share this name. So every time I say our name…she’ll feel the lying, the guilt, and the shame that comes with it.” I said sadly looking into my hands. “My family always treated me like I was there punching bag because it was just that easy. And there was a time when I believed you could change that…”

There was a silence between us. I could hear his slow breathing and it reminded me of the day I left. It sounded just like that, soft and heavy. I leaned against the wall to the tub and closed my eyes. I was so tired of the chaos that kindness caused me. I couldn’t take it anymore. I wouldn’t take it anymore.

            “Gabriella, I…” Drake began.

“No it’s okay. I understand. You don’t remember and you might not ever. I might…”

My chest grew tight and the tears started to bubble over. I could feel my body shake in pain, in utter agony. I sucked my stomach in and tried to breathe through my nose. I tried to put a lid on my feelings. I tried so badly to push down the hurt that followed me.

“I might never see the guy who told me he loved me again.” I cried.

This Chapter is missing a bible verse too. Any suggestions?
