A year later...
It was around six in the morning when Gabriella awoke from her sleep and made her way to the kitchen. She sat at the kitchen table of her house and pressed her hand to her back, massaging the aches out. She looked toward the window for signs of the sunrise and then began to breathe slowly.
Drake sat up in bed and turned over to find his wife wasn’t beside him. There was a fresh chill to the blankets where she should’ve been. He opened the door to their bedroom and made his way to the kitchen. He approached the kitchen as he heard the slow anxious breathing.
There in the chair sat a very pregnant Gabriella. She looked up at him with a mixture of fear and excitement. He turned on the kitchen light and crouched down in front of her. He pressed his hand to her fantastically full stomach and smiled.
“Is he kicking his mother again?” Drake looked at Gabriella amused.
Gabriella’s face held a scowl. “He’s kicking me much more than usual. I think he wants out.” She said fighting back the growing pain.
“Do you think we should go to the hospital?”
“No!” Gabriella replied. “Your mom said it would be better just to wait until my contractions get stronger. Otherwise they’ll just send us home. The first baby is always the hardest.”
Gabriella placed her hand over Drakes and started to play with his wedding band. The day they got married it was raining lightly. Gabriella really hadn’t minded. She loved the rain and to her it symbolized a new beginning in their lives. The rain had washed away all of the previous pain and destruction. When she placed the wedding band on Drake’s finger she couldn’t stop crying because she had found happiness and when he wiped each tear away the pain and frustration went with them.
"Do you want something to drink?" Drake asked. "Should I call our parents?"
"No I don't need water just yet. Can you grab the baby bag in the room and I'll call." Gabriella managed through short breaths.
Drake headed back into their room and hurried to grab the baby bag. Gabriella was busy in the kitchen trying to calm down an excited Rebecca. She made plans to have Rebecca, Drake's mother drive them to the hospital. Within thirty minutes Rebecca and Gabriella's father were knocking on the door.
"Hey Drake, It's your mother! Open up I want to see Gabriella!" Rebecca screamed excitedly through the other side of the front door.
Gabriella's father could be heard in a muffled sound trying to calm down his bubbly wife. "Calm down Rebecca. It's just a baby."
"Just a baby?" She scoffed. "That's my grandbaby in there. Just a baby? Really Dustin you cant' tell me you're not excited. "
"Well as a man, I'm overjoyed, but civilized about my emotions." He mumbled.
Rebecca laughed. "Please Dustin don't start a fight you can't finish! Be lucky I love you old man!"
Then both of them laughed.
Drake opened the door and slowly helped Gabriella to the car. She was forcefully fighting back screams now. Small beads of sweat began to form around her brow and she whimpered in frustration.
