The Space Between Us

"Bye Sami." I wink at her slyly causing a giggle to erupt from her mouth.

"Bye Attie!" She states rolling her eyes at my friendly flirting.

Did I ever tell you guys I'm bisexual? Oops. Very vital piece of information, sorry. I had a crush on Samaria when I was like 13, but I got over it very quickly. She's straight, and she's like my sister.

I walk up the stone steps to enter my "home".

I pull open the large door and light envelopes the kitchen. Quickly I drop my bag down by the front door and toss my converse into the closet.

The spiral staircase in the landing area is Godly. Aunt Tess' house is so beautiful, if you can't tell she has lots of money.

"Hey Attie!" I see Amaris' big blue eyes and kind smile approach me from the living room.

"Hi love bug, how was school today?" I smile back at her, then I kiss the tips of my fingers and brush them onto her cheek.

Amaris is my 11 year old sister, she has a twin brother Alden. These kids are my pride and joy. They're practically mine. Ive been taking care of them since I can remember. Its definitely a huge responsibility, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Im forever grateful for them.

"School was good! I made a new friend today. Her name is Julez!" The excitement in her voice makes my heart warm. I hope Julez can be her Sami.

"Thats great Bub, where's Alden?" I state while looking around the living room puzzled.

"He's in his room, he had a bad day." The energy immediately shifts and I give Amaris an unsettled look. She shrugs at me.

I marched upstairs and opened the door to Aldens room. He's laying face down in his mattress.

"Hey buddy, what are you doing?" I reach to touch his arm and he flinches.

"Hunny, what's wrong?" What's going on with him?

He turns and looks at me blankly like I am making zero sense. I swear I spoke English. I reach for his hand and put it in my lap.

"Talk to me."

He cries.

He falls face first into my chest and just cries. Hiccup after hiccup and tear after tear. I rub his back to soothe him while softly reminding him I'm right here.

"Im right here Hunny, I'm not going anywhere." I state softly

An eternity later, he swiftly pulls away from me and wipes the tears off of his rose colored cheeks. I push his brown hair off of his forehead, and he looks at me still sniffling.

"I don't wanna talk I just want to go to bed." He looks down at his mattress avoiding eye contact with me. Why?

Normally in a situation like this I would pry. Given that Sami does that to me I've learned it gets me what I want, but its also very annoying. If a boundary is set, leave it be. When it becomes a problem is when I will decide to pry.

"Okay buddy, I totally get that. If you do want to talk or you just want someone to listen you know where I'm at. Im here." I kiss the tips of my fingers and brush them against his cheek.

I slowly make my way back to my room. I genuinely want to know what's wrong but I don't want to push him. He's a good kid he's just quiet and kids tend to bully him for it. He really doesn't talk much, he keeps all communication to a minimum. Which is totally okay, I mean id love to bicker and tease him. He just doesn't play into it, he ignores you. That situation was the most noise I've heard out of him since he was a baby that cried all the time.
