The Space Between Us

TW: Self Harm, Mention of Drug Abuse Blood and Alcohol

I sat impatiently in my living room waiting for my grandma to arrive. She's supposed to be here any minute.

I'm not excited or anything, I just want to get it over with.

Aunt Tess came from upstairs and into the living room.

"Sweetheart stop tapping your leg." She said noticing my anxiety.

"I cant." I replied.

Aunt Tess is really pretty. Her hair is a dirty blonde. I'm pretty sure it's dyed, but old people hate to be asked about their complexion and their age.

I think that's weird, but Aunt Tess always says 'you'll get it when you're older' so I suppose I'll just have to wait.

She stood before me all dolled up for her mother's birthday. She's wearing cream colored khaki like pants. They're fitted to her legs, but not too tight. She has on a cream and black blouse with paisleys on it.

She looks pretty.

"Aunt Tess, you look really pretty." I state.

"You think so?" She asks like the statement I made was unbelievable.

"I do." I reply.

She walks into the kitchen with a smile on her face. A smile that I put on her face.

Oh how I love making people feel good about themselves.

I stood up from my seat and walked over to the island that sat in the middle of the kitchen. I grabbed one of the chairs and sat down in it.

I had to dress up as well.

Not necessarily as nice as Tess, but still pretty nice for me.

I'm wearing a black, creme, and white striped crop top and creme pants that mirror my Aunts. She asked if she could match with me. I'm also wearing my black Doc Martens with white socks that have a laced frilly material that peaks out at the top.

The doorbell rings.

"Shes here!" Aunt Tess shouts.

The twins come running down the stair case and stand beside me. Amaris is wearing a nice white dress with a sparkly hem on it. Alden has on nice khaki dress pants and white button up.

"Well you guys look nice." I whisper.

"Thank you." Amaris replies.

Alden smiles at me and motions that I look nice as well by pointing at me and moving his hand in a downward motion.

"Well thank you kind sir." I say, followed by a curtsy.

They both giggle at me before we are all pulled from our conversation.

"Well hello there!" My grandma exclaims.

She annoys the shit out of me.

"Hi." We all day in unison.

"Well you guys look nice." She says to the twins completely ignoring that I exist.

Fine by me.

She then stands up straight and steps directly in-front of me. She looks me up and down from head to toe. I straighten up my back and hold my breath in viciously.

"You look.." She trails off.

"I already know what you're gonna say." I say before she can finish.

"Like your mother." We say in unison.

She scoffs at me and turns to face Tess, "You ready to go?" She asks.
