ROBB COULD see him coming from a mile away. The way Arron nervously dusted his tunic before straightening his shoulders and making his way towards the head table where Robb sat was a dead give away. Robb had been dreading this. It made his shoulders tighten as every muscle hissed in undeniable agony.
"My lord," Arron laughed at the formality. "Robb."
The two boys had been friends since their infancy. However, this also meant they both grew up alongside you...and rather unfortunately, both fell in love...with you. Robb knew as 'the King in the North' Arron would approach him to ask for his blessing before he asked you to marry him. Robb didn't think he could bring himself to give it.
"We've known each other for years—we're brothers. And you've noticed I quite like (Y/N). I'm in love with (her/him/them). I'd like to ask (her/him/them) to marry me, but I need your blessing." Arron smiled hopefully at Robb, clearly missing the annoyance in Robb's cold stare.
"I—I don't think I can give it to you." Robb cursed his own inability to yield. As a fair king he should've bit his tongue, but the word 'yes' had flown from his vocabulary this very minute.
Arron's face was falling as realization turned the gears in his head. His face hardened.
"Are you joking?" He tried to laugh through it, but he was recognizing now the resolve in Robb's face. "You're serious. Why not?"
"I—" He had no idea where to go with an explanation, short of confessing his possessiveness.
"It's because you're in love with (her/him/them)! Isn't it? I'd be a fool to not have noticed but I'm ready to ask (her/him/them) to marry me now! And you're denying me that?!" Arron's voice had risen and risen and risen and the tables surrounding Robb's were beginning to notice.
"That's selfish, Robb! I'm your brother!" He shouted, leaning across the table to direct his point right into Robb's face.
"What is going on with you two?" You burst through the forming crowd, toting a hushed warning tone just before Robb could stop gritting his teeth and respond in a similar volume to Arron. The boys eyes snapped to you.
"Robb is in love with you. And so am I." Arron growled out. "I've asked him to marry you and he's said no because he wants you."
You froze and suddenly all you could picture was Catelyn smirking at you as she had so many times throughout the years. It was clicking. She knew. She had known they liked you all along—that was all the smirking! Hot embarrassment washed over you as practically every eye in the room was on you, but the only one you could meet was Robb's.
He stared at you almost defiantly, with his hands clasped in front of him and his shoulders hunched. You could feel a similar embarrassment radiating off him. He'd been cornered into this conversation, forced into his admission and he was resigned now, in a sort of barely restrained feral rage, that you would not pick him.
Your eyes snapped finally to Arron. "Why was I not consulted on this?"
"I--" He began, but quickly lost the words.
"You have my blessing." Robb murmured, voice raspy with emotion. Your eyes shot to his once again. The crowd seemed to lose interest when the volume dropped and it no longer seemed like punches would be thrown. The volume in the room rose again as everyone resumed previous conversations and frivolity.
"I don't want it." You shook your head, eyes pleading with him to understand. Arron's face was falling with realization. He was a good man and a good friend. He would do his best not to be bitter with you two.
"I guess that's that." Arron sighed, nodding to both you and Robb before swiftly dismissing himself from the room.
You and Robb watched each other for a moment.
"Will you marry me?" It almost sounded like a challenge. Some part of him still expected a dismissal from you. You took his hands in yours on the table.
"Yes."
