By the 5th time it happened, the team really shouldn't have been surprised. But it was like the two were purposely trying to throw them off by becoming increasingly more intimate.
MSBY was holding a small celebratory party after winning their match that afternoon. Only the team and some of their close friends were in attendance, gathered in Hinata's apartment, munching on snacks and sipping low-alcohol drinks.
It wasn't the kind of party where anyone was looking to get properly wasted, though some would later wish they had been for the sole purpose of blaming what they saw on drunken memory.
Akaashi was the one who brought up Sakusa and Atsumu's absence, asking Bokuto if they had shown up at all. Bokuto, figuring this was going to lead to another eye-opening moment, rounded up the rest of the team to help search for the missing couple.
Given the size of the apartment, it didn't take long for Inunaki to call them over to the balcony where he had the drapes of the sliding-glass door pushed aside just enough to allow him a peek through.
The half of them who were still teetering on the edge of denial about their relationship were expecting to find the two in the middle of a heated argument, while the other half teetering on acceptance expected a heated make-out session – they got neither.
Hinata, Meian and Tomas pressed their ears against the draped glass while Bokuto, Inunaki and Barnes got a peek through the fabric. They were far enough away from the party that the music wasn't drowning out the conversation on the other side, so the three were careful to be quiet enough to not be overheard as they relayed to the others what they were seeing.
Sakusa and Atsumu were on the balcony, swaying gently to the muffled music. Atsumu's arms were wrapped around his neck with Sakusa's on his waist, and both were smiling at each other.
"I guess this party isn't so bad."
"Ya say that everytime. Just accept it, ya like 'em."
"This was the first one we didn't have to sneak out of, though," Sakusa pointed out.
"Ya wouldn't call that sneakin'? Omi, ya kept lookin' over yer shoulder to make sure no one was watchin' us."
Sakusa rolled his eyes and huffed.
"It's different. We were sneaking so we could be alone, not because we were trying to leave the party and meet up without the others knowing."
Atsumu laughed.
"I dunno how they never made the connection – we were always leavin' earlier than the others. And if ya didn't go to somethin', I wouldn't go either. We weren't slick."
Sakusa was silent for a moment before he replied.
"Do you think they already knew about us?"
Atsumu pursed his lips in thought, his head tilting from side to side.
"It'd explain why they haven't said anythin'. I was expectin' more of a shock but they act like nothin's changed. S'been nice."
Inunaki scoffed. "As if we aren't getting the shock of our lives–"
Meian smacked the back of his head.
"Mmm. I like being able to cuddle you whenever I want now."
As if to emphasize his point, Sakusa pushed his face into the crook of Atsumu's neck, who flushed and pushed at his shoulder with a chuckle.
"Ya say that but barely do anythin' when there's others around."
"I'm still getting used to it. I'll get there eventually." Sakusa lifted his head and moved one of his hands from Atsumu's waist to his face. Holding his cheek, he leaned in and kissed him softly.
"Besides, it's not as if you're clingy in public like you are in private, either."
"Shut yer trap. I'm not clingy."
"You're the clingiest person I know. And Bokuto is literally on our team."
Meian smacked Bokuto's head before he even had a chance to begin saying something.
"Am not!"
"You are. But it's fine, because you're cute."
Atsumu blushed again while Sakusa pinched his cheek, laughing.
"It's also cute when you get shy like this, as if you don't have the confidence most people can only dream of having."
"S'cause ya always say stuff like that when I'm not expectin' it!"
"Atsu, I compliment you every day. You're going to have to get used to it eventually, because I'm not going to stop."
Sakusa pulled him in for another kiss, his hand returning to Atsumu's waist. Once they parted, he tugged him closer until Atsumu's head was resting on one of the arms he still had draped around his neck.
"And considering I plan on marrying you one day, that's going to be a lot of compliments."
The eavesdroppers each choked out various noises of surprise.
"Marriage–"
"Omi-san–"
"Being soft–"
"I love ya, Omi."
"Love you too, Atsu. My beautiful, adorable, funny–"
None of them got to hear the end of Sakusa's teasing nor see Atsumu's reaction.
"What'cha doin'?"
The six of them backed away from the doors, whipping around to find Osamu standing there with his arms crossed.
Feeling as if they'd been caught by their dad doing something they shouldn't have, which wasn't far from the truth, the men glanced at each other.
"Er–" Hinata spluttered under the newcomer's gaze.
Osamu raised a brow and pushed past them, peeking out to the balcony for himself. When he turned back to the team, who all sported sheepish looks, Osamu simply blinked.
"Yeah, they're annoyin' ain't they?" He laughed.
"I haven't had peace in months. Can't see my own brother without Sakusa taggin' along. Always a third wheel with him now. Must be even worse at practice though, eh?"
Osamu shook his head while the others stared at him in disbelief.
"Always bein' lovey dovey. Fuckin' gross, those two."
He snorted before facing the balcony once again and, to the horror of the team, threw back the drapes and slid the doors open in two swift motions.
"OI! Get back to the fuckin' party, lovebirds! Break it up, there ya go!"
Atsumu pulled away from Sakusa and leveled a glare at his brother.
"'Samu ya ass, mind yer business!"
"Yer team's lookin' for ya, so stop suckin' face and get yer asses back to yer guests!"
Sakusa watched in clear amusement as Atsumu followed Osamu into the apartment, arguing with him as they disappeared from view. He sighed and turned to the team, who were standing there looking shell-shocked.
"You get used to it," Sakusa shrugged before walking off in the direction his boyfriend had gone.
Left with a lot to think about, the remaining teammates slowly disbanded, eventually drifting back towards the party.
