Chapter 22

(Aria's POV)

I could sleep soundly at night unlike before that I hardly had a wink. It was because the gap between me and Mark already had been filled up. It was as if the overdued scourging thorn in my chest was removed. He finally admitted to the principal that he did accidentally caused the fire.

Mr. Hemmingway willingly decided to suspend both him and Zeke for three weeks. However, Ericka pitched in and charmed the principal. It was supposed to be for one month. So, both of them owe her big time.

Kids from school had their fair share of opinions and reactions about the incident. Some believed that we're innocent but mostly were haters who still stuck with their stand that we caused the fire intentionally.

These haters were ruled by 'the snitches', Kate and Claire. They were completely raged when Ericka sold them out. They now hated her and promised that they would get revenge. I doubted that. Ericka's ten times worse than they were, back when she was on the bad side. Plus, she was smarter and keener.

The weeks went by and my highschool life began to stay at ease. Mark and I remained casual and the angst between us was thankfully gone. We talked from time to time but not that often. He told me that after graduation he would move with his family in Chicago and plan to go to college at the university. So, good for him.

Ericka on the other hand, surprisingly visited my house more often this time. It would be safe to say that she's starting to develop a crush on my big brother which was weird I might add. I did not notice it at first but she got all clumsy when Jake's there.

A perfect example was when we were in the kitchen, me and Ericka were nibbling some of the leftover home-made brownies that mom prepared, Jake suddenly marched in. Ericka got tensed that she dropped her precious iPhone. Fortunately,Jake caught it in the nick of time before it smashed the floor.

Jake handed it to her, I saw again a glint in her eyes. I knew from then on that there was something that she's not telling yet she denied it everytime I asked her. I was even guessing she had a crush on him long before the fire incident.

Anyway, if she really liked him then I would not want myself to get in their way. I wanted her to be happy. I saw a new light in her everytime she saw my brother. She would literally lit up like an encandescent light bulb whenever Jake's around or even heard his voice. It's kind of cute.

I just hope my brother could see what I saw. Jake's the type of guy who normally preferred flings than real relationships. He had one though, when he was in junior high. He was madly inlove with this girl. However, she moved away and left my poor brother rot in misery. After that he was never serious when it came to commitments. He became allergic to it. Maybe, Ericka would change all that. Maybe they might have a future together. Just maybe.

I gazed at my own reflection in the mirror and saw a different yet gorgeous girl. My long blonde locks was neatly curled in ringlets. Ericka managed to train me in hairdressing and successfully made it through. My eyes were as bright as the skies in spring. I toned down a bit on the eyeshadows to make my face look younger. Then, from plum colored lips, it turned into a maroonish red that matched my a-line dress.

I traced the hemming of the charmeuse fabric and stared at myself, I felt grander. I looked like a skinny european high fashion model. If only I had the talent to contort my body and pose with angles then I could be one. I smirked at the thought of my sudden interest in modeling.

However, I still love the rocker grunged old me. I still like waking up in the morning and not bothering to comb my hair and put make up on. I still love listening to loud music with my big headphones on. I still dig the color black and watching black and white movies while eating spicy noodles with soda biscuits. It's what I am. It had always been for the past eighteen years. Nevertheless, some things just had to change.
