With my head resting on the pillow, I couldn't stop tossing and turning. Sleep just wouldn't come to me. My mind was busy going over the beautiful paintings I had seen that day, keeping me from drifting off to sleep. Maddie, on the other hand, managed to fall asleep super fast, which only made me feel more frustrated.

My mind took me to Chris' apartment, how well I slept in his arms. I fell asleep so quickly when I was with him.

I picked up my phone, covering it with my blanket so the light wouldn't wake Maddie up. Chris was probably asleep, but I didn't care. I wanted to talk to him.

ALI: Hey
ALI: I can't sleep.

That message sounded childish, but I didn't care. Almost instantly, he replied.

CHRIS: Me neither. I shouldn't have napped in the afternoon.

My heart skipped a beat.

CHRIS: I'm waiting for you.

I rubbed my eyes, not believing what I was seeing. I locked my phone, turning off its light. I glanced at Maddie even though I couldn't really see her in the dark. It would be so risky to go to his room. If she woke up and didn't find me in my bed, what excuse could I give?

I was willing to make up the most elaborate lie if that meant I could be with Chris.

Very slowly as to not make a sound, I got out of bed. I left the room in my pajamas, bringing only with me the room key card and my phone. The corridor was chillingly empty so I hurried as fast as I could up the stairs to Chris' floor. I knew the number of his door and knocked lightly. In a matter of seconds, I was inside, Chris pulling me into a tight hug, my face buried in his chest. He was wearing a t-shirt and sweats, his feat bare.

"This is so risky Chris." I said into his skin. "I need to be back in my room before Maddie wakes up."

He kissed me on the forehead, letting me go and looking me in the eyes.

"Yes, we'll set an alarm, don't worry." He said. "Until then, you're all mine."

I giggled as he motioned me to make my way inside his room. It was much more spacious than mine, and more comfortable too. Perks of being a professor, I guess.

"Come here, let me show you something."

Chris called me to the window. I got closer to him, his finger pressed against the glass.

"You can see the lights of the Eiffel Tower in the distance." He said over my shoulder. "Over there, between those buildings. Can you see it?"

It was so far away I had to squint my eyes to find it, but when I did, it was magical.

"Wow." Was all I managed to say as I sat on the window ledge, admiring the lights of the city below. Chris kissed my cheek as we stared out the window, my back leaning against his chest.

Then, suddenly, he placed his hands on my shoulders and pushed me away.

"I have something for you." He said, walking away from me. I turned around, studying his movements. He reached inside his coat pocket and retrieved a small white box.
