I'd never felt at ease in fancy places, even something as otherwise unassuming as a hotel. Something about tall ceilings and open marble floor just made me feel cheap. It didn't help that everyone around me was well-suited both, figuratively and literally. In the very least, Rossi had, somewhat forcefully, helped me in that regard.
Strangely enough, the most embarrassing aspect of getting fitted for a suit wasn't the man measuring me, but the way Rossi had almost teared up at the realization that I'd never had anyone to help me before. Most of the people who arrived at the BAU came already accustomed to some kind of extravagance.
For a long time, I was the only one who seemed out of place at Rossi's lavish events in high society. Once Luke came, however, that all changed. He became, only somewhat begrudgingly, another petal to the wallflowers. Still looked better in a suit than me, but I digress. My attention was, for once, not geared towards him. If I'd looked at him or been able to process any word of what was being said, I might have realized that he'd noticed my averted gaze nearly five minutes before.
I would have seen him follow it across the way to a woman seated by herself at a table. She hadn't been alone for long — only a couple minutes, really — and I couldn't imagine it would last much longer. I'd been watching her for most of the night, along with all of the other men with any sense at all.
At that moment, my focus was drawn down to a sliver of her thigh peeking out behind her dress as she crossed her legs. It seemed odd, if not downright impossible, for her skin to be glowing the way it was.
"What do you think, Reid?"
"Yeah, that's interesting..." I mumbled without even sparing him a glance. That was, until he started to laugh.
"You know you aren't actually talking to me, right?" Luke asked through a wicked grin that made me wildly uncomfortable for a number of reasons.
"What?"
"Why don't you just go talk to her?"
Deciding to play dumb, and coincidentally proving my stupidity at the same time, I awkwardly returned, "T-Talk to who?"
At first, Luke just laughed. But I was persistent in my feigned cluelessness, and so he took a slightly different approach. Gesturing directly towards her, he announced a little too loud for comfort, "The woman who's been checking you out for the last ten minutes."
"What?!" I shouted back in a hushed whisper that was somehow still quieter than him, "She has?"
"Is that a serious question?"
Unfortunately, I looked back towards her at the worst possible time. Before my eyes could even focus on the crystalline beauty of her smile, she had hidden it behind her hand. Her pointed finger curling in a come hither motion that made me almost too terrified to look her in the eyes.
So, I didn't.
Turning back around to Luke and grabbing hold of the table, I panicked.
"Oh, god. What do I do?"
"Are you joking?!" he yelled, not at all afraid of his volume anymore, "Go, man!"
"What if she's not talking to me?"
