There are some days, some experiences that are too good to believe. The one that I accomplished that day was by far the most unbelievable.
Because after years and years of begging, I was finally standing in the bullpen of the BAU.
I'd heard about the infamous office since I was still a preteen. Aaron Hotchner had discussed it with me often... In the sense that he would discuss it with my parents, and I would eavesdrop. Aaron would always pretend not to notice, or in the very least didn't mind that I had been waiting around the corner with ears wide open.
I think he knew even then that I would end up here. That was why in my last year of undergraduate, Aaron Hotchner finally agreed to let me shadow him at the BAU... Whenever our impossible schedules line up and the team was actually in town.
After a month of canceled plans, I was starting to think it would never happen. But there I was.. The day had come and he didn't call me! He didn't cancel! I made it all the way to Quantico, got onto the base, and made it into the building.
And there I was. In the bullpen.
The only problem was that the person who opened the door for me assumed that I knew what I was doing since I knew Aaron. I definitely do not.
So, recap: I'm in the bullpen, a place I've never actually been in, and I have no idea what's going on or what I'm supposed to do.
After a brief scan of the place, I noticed a man scrunched up in a chair, drawing his fingers quickly down each page of the book in his hand.
It had to be him.
Awkwardly shuffling over to his desk, I poked my head over his book. He didn't notice.
"Are you Dr. Reid?"
Surprised, the man suddenly sat straight up and practically threw his book on the ground. It was kind of adorable, but I also felt terrible.
"I'm sorry!" I shouted, bending over to pick up the book at the same time as him, which made us both directly knock into each other.
Smooth.
"I'm sorry!" I repeated, already wishing that I could start this entire interaction over.
Why was I excited to be there, again?
"I-It's sorry. I mean, I'm sorry. Hello. I'm sorry. Yes. I'm Dr. Reid. C-Can I... Can I help you?"
I was so enamored by his flustered, charming, adorable response that I almost forgot why I was there myself. I suddenly felt less like an awkward loser standing somewhere I clearly didn't belong.
"Yeah, I uh..."
I was saved by his phone going off. Once he glanced down, he held up a finger, mouthing the word "sorry" before answering.
"Hey Hotch—"
He was cut off, presumably because Aaron was about to tell him that he was not, in fact, going to make it. Something must have come up.
Spencer's constantly shifting expressions told me what was happening. Aaron was either telling him:
(a) to send me home,
(b) let me shadow him, instead, or
© push me off to someone else.
