Two weeks after her first weekend with Nick, Lindsay borrowed money from her parents, Nick's car, and a day off work to retain a lawyer. She set the divorce train in motion. In a few days, the lawyers would prepare the divorce papers and send them wherever they needed to go. Eventually Kevin would learn of her request.
She asked for a lump sum payout, and he'd sign away all his rights to Faith. He had no interest. When she finished, she folded over the steering wheel in Nick's car and cried. If Kevin accepted her offer, Lindsay would bear the burden of his rejection. If he refused and started visitation, Lindsay would lose time with her baby.
Her phone beeped and she glanced over at it.
Nick: I love you.
She grabbed onto him like a lifeline. She replied the same, wishing she could be home with him. He'd be there for her and Faith if she let him. Why couldn't she accept it?
She grabbed groceries she couldn't buy back home, and picked up clothes for Faith, because she was outgrowing the set she had.
All day, she thought about Nick. She was at his place every evening after Faith was asleep. And twice a week she and Faith ate at his place and spent the evening at the park or playing board games, integrating their lives.
When she got home, her mom was there. "You're off early."
"Yeah, I wanted to talk before you pick up Faith."
Lindsay set her bags on the counter. She unpacked the groceries. "About Nick, I assume?"
"Yes. Do you feel as if your relationship is moving too fast?"
"It started fast, but we won't rush into anything. He's a steady guy."
"He's well liked in town but you weren't planning on living here forever. When you came, you wanted out fast."
"I did, but now I'm not sure." Lindsay sighed. "I always feel like everyone is judging me for what happened."
"No one is judging you for what happened when you were eighteen. You were a kid."
She shook her head. "People do, but I shouldn't care what they think. That decision is part of why I want the divorce done. I asked Kevin give up his rights over Faith."
"You did?" her mom's eyes widened.
"He hasn't tried to see her, he hasn't even fucking called. I don't want to waste the next ten years chasing him to see his kid. If he wants out, fuck it. Nick wants in."
"But you don't want to stay here. You always felt persecuted."
"He said he would move with me if I wanted that. If I couldn't stay here."
"He said that? What about his class?"
Lindsay shrugged. "He didn't say. If Kevin signs away his rights we will discuss the possibility. If that happens, I have to break Faith's heart, poor little soul. Then I'll talk to her about what she wants. Her needs, her desires are my priority. I plan to pay you back and save for a house." Her mom waited patiently for Lindsay to vent everything wrong with her life.
"Don't worry about paying us back. Like you put Faith first, you and your brother are our priority."
"Lucky for you, he's self sufficient."
"You've hit a bump in your road. We've been nothing but proud of you, Lindsay. Even when you had to make the hardest decision of your life, we would support whatever choice you made. We agonized over it."
"I'm sorry I made it so hard on you. Disappointing you and Dad was the worst. I know you had to be disappointed." Lindsay frowned as she leaned on the counter.
