Lindsay pulled up her jacket collar as she walked home from Holly's office. She waved at every car that drove by. Home, she was home. She and Nick would get married in the middle of Main Street with every person in a ten-mile radius attending. Minus Jamie Rozen. He'd adopt Faith and they'd have at least one more baby. She'd take over Holly's business. Life would be perfect.
A black SUV pulled up beside her and the window rolled down. Her brother called her name. "Get in. I'll give you a ride. Where are you going?"
Lindsay was going to protest, but she changed her mind. She jogged around the car and climbed in the passenger seat. "Mom and Dad's. I finished work for the day. How are you Curt?"
"I was coming to see you."
"Why?" Lindsay drew back.
"Chuck called me today."
"That's good. I told him to."
"Thanks. I'm sorry for what I said the other night. And bringing up Kevin. I know I can be an asshole."
"Well, I can be a bitch. So I guess we're even. Drove me nuts when were kids though. You were popular while I was in the corner. And you were good at everything."
"I wasn't good at everything. I scraped by in school. You always won awards for being smart. Everyone always talked about how smart you are and if I worked harder I'd get good grades like you. And then you dated my best friend."
Lindsay wrinkled her nose. "I never knew. Sorry. I guess nothing is perfect."
"I didn't know how you felt either." He parked in their parents driveway. "Truce?" Curt held out his hand.
Lindsay leaned over and hugged him across the console. "You're my brother."
"Chuck said his sister wouldn't be a problem anymore either."
"Thank fuck."
"What did she do?"
"Told Barb Alves that I was pregnant."
"Told the entire town you mean?"
"Pretty much."
Curt shrugged. "At least I never spread rumors about you." His phone beeped. "That's Val, I need to go. But she told me to tell you she wants to have you and Nick out for supper some night."
Lindsay's heart stuttered. "I'll have to get back to you."
"Sure. Nick seems nice."
"He is. Thank you for telling me all this." Lindsay stepped out of the car, feeling lighter. She waved as Curt drove away and looked around. She loved growing up here. Faith loved it here. Her family was here. This was her home.
Inside the house she changed into something more comfortable then read some of the smutty romance novel Nick bought her. Time passed slowly, but eventually the time came to walk to the school to pick up Faith. Faith ran up and hugged her. "Mommy." The girl looked up with her father's blue eyes. "Can we see Nick?"
"I guess." Lindsay's heart sped up. She had to face him.
"Are you mad at him?"
Lindsay rubbed her daughter's hair. "Not at Nick. It's grown up stuff."
"Don't you love him?"
"I do."
Faith rubbed her cheek against Lindsay's side. "Me too, Mom."
Once they reached the high school hallway, Faith ran into Nick's classroom. She heard their voices. As she entered, she watched them talking. "Faith, should I marry your mom?" Nick asked, looking at Lindsay.
