The next day I woke up at like 4am and headed straight for the stables, I figured I should get to know Patches and exersize him. I grabbed the new halter and leadrope and a lunge line, I grabbed the new saddle and halter and a light blue saddle pad and set that up in the outdoor arena. I took the halter and leadrope and walked over to patches stall. He nickered me a greeting and I stroked his soft nose. slowly the door rolled open as I unlocked it. Patches stood there as I slipped on the halter and clipped the leadrope on, I walked and he followed.
Once he was in the arena I closed the gate so he couldn't get out and I started walking him around in a clockwise direction, then I told him to change rein and we walked down the middle and walked the other direction. "Trot on" I asked him and he immediately responded. I changed the rein again and then asked for a canter, He again immediately responded and we changed reins. I then slowed him to a walk and started transition work. I asked him to trot from standing and he did, then I asked him to walk from trot, Easy! I said "canter" and he responded with an encouraging snort. I decided to challenge him and got him into a canter from stand still! He amazed me! I decided to do some extended trot and canter, again he knew it very well! I was over excited now and decided to set up some trotting poles and a small jump. I got him into a trot and took him over the poles, he didn't come near to knocking one! I then took him around and over the maybe 10cm jump, he perfectly jumped it and flicked his tail up over it, Adorable! I took up the jump to 30cm and cantered him at it, he took one huge stride and over he went!
My mum and dad arrived down at the stable at around 7am When I told them what Patches was capable of they dropped their jaws! "Hun I think its time we break him in!" my dad said. I looked at him excited and jumped up and down several times before mum said "Hurry up, we have no time to waste!" So I went up to him with the saddle pad in my hand and rubbed his back and whither to reassure him I wouldn't hurt him. I then slowly started putting on the saddle pad, He didn't seam to care! I asked mum for a winter rug and she got one for me. I slowly dragged it along his back up to his whither and he looked at me, ears prick forward, he was sweet with it. I got an exercise ball and started rolling it under him and against his legs gently, he didn't care at all until I started going higher, then he started to put his ears back, when I put it lightly on his back he did a little buck and snorted. I tried again and this time he did a little kick with his right back leg. After about half an hour to an hour he didn't care about the ball so I decided it was time for the saddle. I put the girth over top of the saddle and slowly put it above his back, He was listening. I started putting the saddle more and more on his back until I finally got it on. He had his ears back and then put them forward again I walked him around like that for a while and he didn't seem to care so I decided to do the girth up a little bit. I did it up just enough that he could feel it against his belly, I then walk, trotted and cantered him around and he seemed perfectly fine. so i tightened up the girth and did the same. no reaction, I finally put it up to his size and walk, trot, cantered him around and over the jump. he looked like he was loving it! It was now time for the bridle, oh no. I started to play around with his mouth. He didn't care. I put my finger in his mouth where the bit would usually go. He did what a normal horse would do and played around with it like he would with a bit, I then went to find a spare bit that wasn't attached to a bridle and took it out to the arena. I asked him open up just to see if he'd already been taught, He had and did exactly what I asked, I held the bit in place with both my hands and he did the same thing he did with my finger. The bit tossed and turned against his crazy tongue and I decided it was time for a real bridle. The new black one with the blue nose band and the blue diamonte brow band I grabbed specially and fitted him perfectly, I again asked him 'Open up boy' and he again IMMEDIATELY did it! I slowly pulled on the bridle and in went the bit, Oh he looked stunning in black and blue! I did up the bridle and flung the reins over his ears so they were loosely hanging over his neck. I walked him around (he still had the halter on underneath the bridle) and took him over the trotting poles. I then started trotting him, again I took him over the poles. I then asked my father if he could be a photographer for a while, while I broke him in, My dad said yes of course and he got his camera. I lead Patches over the jump and then got him into a canter, I cantered him over the jump and then took the jump up to 40cm I cantered him towards it and jumped next to him over it. My dad got back just as my mum was helping me get on patches, I was on in no time and my mum used the lunge rope to walk me around. My dad took the jump down to 20cm so I could jump it after I worked patches in. But I decided I had done enough for the day and untacked patches. I made his feed up and hosed his sweaty body down. My dad told me he'd handle it while me and my mum tacked up rifle, after all we did have a big show coming up!
