year passed and yua finally figured out what happened to her mother. after being put in the hospital, her mother turn to a life of drugs and alcohol in order to cope. she was shortly arrested in the states for drug possession.
killua, however, still made sure to visit the girl everyday; and if he couldnt, he made sure to inform her.
her health conditions got worse as time progressed, going from 130 pounds to 97 with the snap of a finger. she became weak, unable to keep anything down, and she couldn't walk.
emi placed a heart monitor inside her room. yua knew emi suspected her to die soon, even if she didn't say it aloud. she always gave yua a small glint of pity every time she saw her or talked to her.
in all honesty, emi suffered the most during this. having to take care of a girl who was just happy, healthy and content and is now lying on her death bed.
there were even times emi would debate on asking another nurse to bring yua her medicine. not because she didn't want to see her- of course she did, she was like a daughter to her. she just didn't want to see her like this.
she never expected yua to become so weak and frail in such a short time frame. she was always she happy to see killua coming to visit the small girl everyday; making sure she had company while emi worked hard with other patients in the hospital.
"hey yua!" killua exclaimed, walking in the door. his voice was scratchy and hoarse, his face was redder than usual as well as if he had a high fever. "don't talk! i'll talk to you." he quickly added, sitting in his usual chair.
he held an assortment of flowers in his hand ; red poppies, black roses, chrysanthemum, and some yellow flowers.
"it's almost valentine's day again and i wanted to bring you something since weatherman says it's not gonna snow again for a while." he hummed, coughing into his arm before trying to cover it up with a yawn.
yua's eyes flickered to the bag he held in his hand before he pulled out an assorted chocolate box in the shape of a heart.
she softly laughed, smiling at the cheesy thought since he was always a hopeless romantic.
"killua, i cant eat these." she hummed softly, looking at the male who played with the ring on his finger. he seemed to always be in deep thought whenever he was with her nowadays; picking up a nervous habit of biting his lip and playing with his ring.
he chuckled after a few, shaking his head softly before putting a finger to his mouth.
"i won't tell emi if you don't." he joked. she nodded, rolling her eyes with a smile at his usual jokes before he looked around her room in thought once more. "awh, you don't have a vase!" he frowned.
quickly standing, he made his way to the door before looking back at the sick, confused girl.
"i'll be back! i'm gonna ask emi for one." he smiled, softly before letting out a hard string of coughs. yua caught a glimpse of something red making its way into his hand as well as his momentary frown before he covered it up with a smile.
"i love you, yua!" he smiled, leaving the room to get his vase.
she beamed a bright smile, completely forgetting about the blood she saw and the symptoms he possessed. the words ringing repeatedly in her head as she processed them.
"i love you too, killua." she chuckled.
after a while, emi walked into the room. her hair covered her face as she bit the inside of her cheek; pasting a forced smile onto her pretty face before looking over at yua.
she set the vase down and sighed internally before starting to get a lie together in her head.
"killua had to go home early, so i brought you your vase." she hummed, biting the inside of her cheek harder only to taste the metallic of blood.
"ah?" yua stated, narrowing her eyes with a questioning glint. she wanted to believe it. she didn't want emi to be lying to her. so she took her word, like always.
