CHAPTER 13: FLOODING MEMORIES
MARCEL'S POV
I stood against the wall, closing my eyes to fully listen to their conversation.
"Now that Elena is dead," I heard Monte speak, "who else is creating the cure?"
Cure?
Was there a cure to our virus?
"I got her to confess to everything; I know where they are as well. Some guy named Ric is still working on it. They're using your mutt's blood to create it. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that."
What did Aya want with the cure? After all these years? And what did she mean by his mutt's blood? Was Angelina's blood the same; was that why she could have defied Aya's command?
"Do you still think it wise to betray everyone? I thought for a family you all were pretty...close," Monte grew quiet. "We are," she answered and I heard movement, "but...sometimes personal gain is all that matters." "I guess you are really a cold-hearted bitch." "And you love it."
"That I do."
I whisked away before I heard what happened next and ran to Maya.
She was curled up in a ball; asleep as I entered and closed the door; waking her.
"Marcel? What's wrong?" she asked, stretching and I began to pace. "I told you," I started, "I fucking told you. She's planning something. I heard her and her boy toy talking just now. She is going to betray us."
"How? Why would she do that? After everything?" "Why does Aya do anything? For the name of Samosa." "Well," Maya stood and walked toward me, "what is she planning?" "She's found a cure."
"A cure?"
I nodded my response, "She's obviously planning to use it against us, so that she is the last standing Samosa." "There's really a cure?" "Listen Maya, a cure is not good for us." "It's better than this...this constant dread; this hunger." "If she cures us, then that means she can kill us."
"Aya would never hurt us." "But she has already. She has stung us in other ways than physical; forced our loyalty for things we couldn't control in our true youth, Maya. This is very bad."
"Then what do we do?" "I guess we recruit our brothers."
"Michael will never betray her." "Then we get to Markus and Malachai first." "This sounds really scary, Marcel." "This is becoming life or death; I'll be back to release you." "You're going to free me."
"Maya," I grabbed her through her cell, "I swear if you run off after I open this gate, you are dead to me." "I swear, I will stand by you until the very end, Marcel."
MICHAEL'S POV
"I told you," I started as I filled her in.
"He lies to me of loyalty just to plan and rally against. Who the fuck does he think he is?"
I looked at my sister and grew quiet. Was it true? I was afraid to ask her, but I had to know.
"Is it true? Is there a cure?" "Not at the moment; the association is making one and I plan to take it from them and kill them. Why would he conjure some lie about me?"
"I never question you, but why would you not tell us about this cure?" "Because I know how gullible you all are. How the human life would seem appealing; I want to destroy that cure. And besides it doesn't exist just yet."
"Aya," I looked at her, but she slammed her hands down and I jumped as she ran to me.
"Michael?" she spoke to me and I looked at her. "Are you doubting my judgment?" "No, I just..." "Just what? Because it seems as if you're questioning my loyalty to you. To this damn family; as if I have ever put anyone before me. Before my own happiness." "What is your happiness? What is your true goal, Aya?"
