After they get off the school bus, there they stand - the Shadysiders on Sunnyvale's school campus. Last year they played colour war at Shadyside high, but this year it's happening at Sunnyvale high.

"Let's fuck these Sunnyvalers up!" Simon screams as he gets off the bus - holding their team flag.

"Yeah let's fuck em up!" Kate also screams after Simon.

"What idiots." Deena says shaking her head.

"Hey where's Josh?" Sam questions.

"He's at the arcade, he's not exactly the sporty type. Let's get this over with - shall we?" Deena makes a path with her arms for Sam as they both let out a chuckle.

They head to the football field where the school principles explain the game and give out roles. Even though most of the students already knew how to play - it's basically just like capture the
flag.

The Shadyside principle announces who's who.
"Simon Kalivoda, Heather Watkins, and Deena Johnson will be the three defenders. Samantha Fraser, you will be the jailer."

"Yes!" Simon lets out in excitement.

"Ugh, out of all the students I had to be a defender." Deena groans in disappointment.

"Oh come on, at least you got a good role." Kate complains.

"What's a jailer?" Sam asks.

"Chase the enemy, put them in the teams jail, and don't let those Sunnyvale bitches set them free." Kate explains - wanting to win this thing. Even though it's impossible for Shadyside to win anything.

"START!" The principle yells.

Sam makes her way to the other side of the campus - staring at the Sunnyvalers like they're prey. Suddenly she spots Kate running towards the targets flag like a hooligan.
Sam couldn't help but let out a laugh. She's never seen Kate run so fast.

Sam spots a Sunnyvaler after their flag. She starts running towards them to imprison them, but her knee starts to give - Maybe next time she should skip P.E.

"Shit." Sam groans - falling face first onto the grass.

"Gotcha." A Sunnyvaler - Peter, grabs Sam by the arm, pulling her up.

"Shadyside trash. Can't even run without falling on your face." He pulls Sam towards the jail. When suddenly someone jumps on the boys back.

"Get off!" Deena screams - her arms wrapped around the guys throat.

"What the fuck?!" The boy yells.

They head towards the jail with their new catch.

"Holy shit we got one!" Sam smiles at Deena - as proud as ever.

"Yeah we got one." Deena manages to spit out while laughing.

"Thanks for the save."

"Yeah I saved your ass." Deena chuckles as Sam nudges her arm.

"This is fun. Maybe we can win this." Sam says, still smiling like a fool at Deena Johnson.

"I guess you're our good luck charm." Deena laughs - pulling Sam into an embrace.

"Thanks." Sam whispers into the brunettes ear.

"For what?" Deena steps out of the hug.

Sam tries to speak, but nothing comes out.
She leans in close to Deena - inches away from her face, staring at her lips - her hearts beating out of her chest.

"THEY GOT THE FLAG!" Simon screams - interrupting the two girls.

"FUCKING RUN!" Kate screams as loud as she can - which is pretty loud.

Sam and Deena both laugh - running right behind their two cracked friends.

"This is amazing!" Sam says - out of breath.

Eventually the Sunnyvalers captured their flag for the third time. Winning the whole thing.

"I told you we'd lose. Colour War fucking sucks." Deena let's out in a raspy voice.

"Yeah yeah." Simon lets out.

They all get in the car - now wearing their normal clothes, and at Shadysides parking lot.

On the way home the gang listens to one of Deenas mixtapes. All jamming out in the car - ignoring their defeat.

"Drop me off with Kate, we have business to attend to." Simon says as they reach their neighbourhood.

As Deena drops them off she hears a beep coming from her pocket. It's her pager, it says 'Josh 20'

"I gotta pick up Josh, wanna come?"

"Sure." Sam replies to Deena with a smile on her face.

Deena steps on the gas and heads towards the arcade. Still jamming out to music.

Once they park the car and wait for Josh, Deena stops the music.

Deenas POV
———————
"You thanked me earlier, when we were playing colour war. Why..?"
I had to ask. I couldn't shake it out of my mind.

Sam looks over at me - fidgeting with her hands on her lap.
"You're just.." Sam stutters.

I turn towards her. Staring at her, I don't know if I should be concerned or not.

"You're a good... friend. I'm really thankful for you - and Kate, and Simon. Being friends with you guys, you make me feel like me."

Sams blushing again, but so am I. Hearing her say this just gives me butterflies. I put my hand on hers.
"I'm glad we're friends too." I say genuine as ever.

Sams just different, I don't know how to put it in words. She makes me happy... more than happy.

"I beat my high score!" Josh says opening the car door.

I take my hand off Sams.

"That's great nerd. Did you have fun?" I ask.

"Yeah. Thanks for taking me."

Sams POV
——————
Its quiet the whole ride home - despite the music blasting throughout the car.
I can't stop thinking about colour war. Why did I step so close to Deena?
What would've happened if Simon didn't interrupt us? Could we have..?

"Okay nerd, get out of the car." I hear Deena say - grinning at Josh.

As Deena walks up to her front step I can't help but stop her.

"Deena?" I walk up and grab her hand - it's cold, but also soft. So soft...

Deena doesn't say anything, she just looks at me - slightly biting her lip.

"I..."

"Samantha!" My mom yells my name. Why is she not at work?

I let go of Deenas hand and step away.

"Samantha get in the house!"

I walk up to my front door - entering my house.

"Do you know where your father is?!"

"What?" I ask in confusion. Why did she drag me into the house just to ask me this?

"He's not at work. I called there, they said he's not there." My mom said in a stern tone.

"He's probably getting groceries or-." I try to say, but my mom rudely interrupts me.

"He said he'd be at work until 8pm. So obviously he's not out for groceries. Just go - do homework or something." My mom blurts out, she seems irritated.

I walk upstairs to my room and plop my bag on the floor - I fall back on my bed. My knee is blue from when I was pushed over in P.E.

Not long after laying on my bed - zoned off, staring at the ceiling. I hear knocks at the front door. Dad?

I make my way downstairs, expecting to see my dad.
But it's definitely not my dad - it's Deena, talking to my mom.

"Sams busy doing homework. She can't see you right now." My mom slams the door in Deenas face.

Why is she so angry?
