"Nina, take a walk." Alice says, pulling me up off Luke's bed. The sun barely peeks through the early morning sky. I assume we left the city early. We walk down the sidewalk and away from the house. away from Calum's snoring and Luke's strong arms wrapped around me. I take a shakey breath and Alice speaks before I can.
"What happened that night, Nina?"
"What are you talking about?"
"You know what I'm talking about. The night he died. Last night you were muttering about i hate yous and how it was your fault when we were bring ing you home. You're dad came home early, we figured Luke's place would be the best place for you. We were all pretty messed up, to be honest. But what were you talking about?" She looks at me, stern and confident. I sigh.
"We got into a fight. I dont even remember what it was about. Something that seemed important at the time. Needless to say, it esclated quickly. Yeling turned into screaming, screaming turned into throwing things, throwing things turned into throwing punches and more screaming and crying... he said he hated me, Alice. I just... left him there. In the middle of broken glass and holes in the walls from where his fists hit. I just left him..."
"Nina.."
"If i hadnt left he would still be alive. Its as simple as that."
"No, Nina. He was sick, there was nothing you could do."
"I could have stayed." The tears come before I can stop them. God, I am so sick of crying. Alice envelpoes me in her arms and i get left over mascara on her shirt.
"I miss him so fucking much."
"I know babygirl. I do too.." Alice whispers. The familiar form of Luke wraps around us.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"You guys needed me."
