Agnes
I sat on the steps, secretly I was waiting for girl to show up but I told my parents I was just catching my breath.
About two hours into the party, she showed up. I got up out my seat and walked to her, being sure to be casual about it.
"Hey," I greeted.
"Hey," she looked me up and down. "Blair?"
"Oh my God," I giggled. "You recognized?"
"Yeah. I watch Gossip Girl like all the time," she responded.
Keep in mind that everything we are saying is being amplified due to the music.
"Yeah, same, I watch with my mother," I smiled.
"What?"
I repeated what I said, yelling it louder.
"Want to go someplace quiet?" She asked me.
I nodded my head. The quietest place I could think of was my room. "Come on."
We marched up the steps to my bedroom.
"This is such a nice room," she complimented.
"Thank you," I smiled. "I decorated it myself."
"So you're like...actually rich."
"Well," I shrugged. "My mom."
She sat at the end of the bed. "So, what made you want to throw this party?"
Well if I was being honest, she was the reason why. I wanted her to come here, her to know my name.
"Well my mom wants me to be more social," I shrugged. Not sure if it was true but it was better than telling her my mom wanted to throw a party because she never got one. "And I thought costume parties were alway successful."
"Yeah they are," she shrugged. "I'm Michelle by the way."
I smiled. Oh right, Michelle. "I'm Agnes."
She laughed a little, I could tell she was trying suppress the rest.
I sighed. "Yeah, I know. It's embarrassing."
"No, no," she shook her head. "It's unique. People don't meet Agnes's."
I shrugged. "That's what my mom said but she's my mom so she's obligated to do so," I rolled my eyes. "What's your costume?" I asked, realizing she looked pretty basic.
"Oh I didn't dress up as anything but my boyfriend, Micheal, he dressed as detective from the sixties. Pretty hot," she giggled.
What did she say?
Boyfriend?
"You..." I drifted off. "Have a boyfriend?"
"Yeah," she giggled again. "We've been together since the eight grade. We're about to be seniors and then to college so hopefully we can get excepted to the same ones."
If I had a smile on my face, it's completely gone.
"What's wrong?" She furrowed her brows.
"Nothing," I shook my head.
"You ever had a boyfriend?" She furrowed my brows.
I shrugged. "No, but that's not..." I shook my head. "Why don't we just go back downstairs?"
"You okay Agnes? You were so smiley before now you're so down? Did I say something?"
Yes.
"No," I gave her a small smile. "I think your relationship is cute. Or well I don't really know much about it but the idea of going to college with your soulmate is very romantic."
"Afraid you'll be lonely forever?"
Afraid I'll never figure myself out. And if I am lesbian, or bi even, no lesbian, I'll never find someone. I'll be alone forever.
"Maybe," I laughed a little. "Sometimes it's difficult, ya know."
She furrowed her brows. "Uh, I don't...I don't know."
"Yeah. I don't know what I meant either," I laughed a little more.
She laughed a little too. "Yeah. I mean if you were like lesbian or something I get how it could be complicated. Your born with expectations to be with a boy but instead you end up falling for your own gender," she gagged. "I couldn't."
What?
"You're homophobic?"
"I mean I wouldn't say that. I just think it's kind of nasty and weird that someone who want to be with someone they can't reproduce with. Lesbians, gays. We're made to reproduce, with the opposite side, not the same side."
Wow.
She ended up being a huge disappointment.
For whom I thought was open minded, she's extremely close minded.
Are all people like this?
Are my parents like this?
"I think you should go," I whispered.
"What?"
"I...I think you should go. Back to the party, your boyfriend is probably looking for you."
"Did I offend you? You gay or something."
I sighed. "You think women should go make sandwiches for their no for good husbands who go to work and do absolutely nothing yet comes home to complain who also happens to sexually harrass you?"
"What? I'm not misogynist."
"Oh well," I shrugged. "Being that your an absolute idiot when it comes to the LGBTQ community gives off the energy that you are. If someone wants to sleep with their own gender they can. And they can reproduce with the help of a guy, doesn't mean they have to date one."
"Should have known you were a lesbo," she sighed. "You dress like one at school."
"I'm not lesbian," I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever," she walked out my room and slammed my door.
Ugh. I'm so angry.
Of course she was a terrible person. Looks are so deceiving.
*****
"You opening all these damn gifts tonight?" My mom asked.
"No," I shook my head. "I'll do it tomorrow or something."
"Okay," she smiled. "Goodnight." She turned my light off before closing my bedroom door.
What a terrible fourteenth birthday.
