I step forward, my hand outstretched so that my brother and I can agree to the pact. He mirrors me, and once our hands meet, I drop my arm back to my sides quickly.
Backing away quickly, I click my neck. Then, as fast as lightning, he comes at me.Kain flies at me, fist outstretched. Ducking underneath his arm, I give a roundhouse kick to his collarbone, then punch him in the gut. I turn to face him again, but found myself faced with another fist. We carry on sparring for a while, him trying to get a punch in and me dodging and kicking him. We continue like this for at least five whole minutes.
Bored by the repetitive pattern of our fight, I decide to spice it up a little. Instead of dodging the punch Kain usually throws, I catch in in my hand and twist it. Backwards. Trust me, it is not something you want to experience.
Using the arm I have curled unnaturally, he manages to throw me over him so my back collides painfully with the ground. He straddles me and starts to throw punch after punch to my head, neck and chest. His punches are planned , calculated. The stinging pain of them throws me into a stupor, the tendrils of unconsciousness curling around me.
Suddenly, a wonderful scent finds its way into my nasal passages, successfully shocking me out of my absent frame of mind, I sit bolt upright, startling Kain to the extent of toppling of me. While he's on the ground I manage to get a few good kicks around his stomach and ribs. He rolls away from me, changed into his wolf form by the time he gets up. Alarmed by the quick change, I stumble back. Taking it as a sign of weakness, he pounces forward, jaw wide open. My reflexes let me down in that instant. I was greeted with the agonising pain of sharp canines ripping into my arm, the skin shredded. Blood drips from Kains teeth as I sink to the ground, cradling my arm. He paces around my shaking form.
Inside my body, I can feel Luza clawing at the surface. Quickly noticing my weakened state, she takes control, my bones cracking and popping. In wolf form, I shake my head sharply and snap at a peice of fluff flying past me.
What can I say? Who doesn't love fluff?
Kain seems to be mind linking another pack member, because his head is cocked and he has an absent look in his eyes. I'm not about to attack him when he is not focused, it's cowardly. Barking to get his attention, he snarls then starts to pace forward. His eyes land on me, scrutinising me. My wolf is huge, bigger than most males, but still lithe and feminine. Evil reddish eyes flash back and forward to blue as I step forward to meet him.
I know what's happening. His wolf is recognising that I am more powerful and would be a deadly opponent. Stubbornly, the human side of Kain is refusing to back down, resulting in the fact that his wolf is deserting him temporarily. Having heard stories from what this feels like, I imagine it is painful, being forced back into your human form without consent on both sides.
He is left cowering and naked, crouched on the floor. A grimace of disgust and apprehension adorns his features as Kain tilts his head away from me. I nod slowly.
"Prepare your men. Ann, Mike, Theo, secure them please." I turn to Julian. "We need to discuss.... Well, everything. We'll talk once we get back."
My partner nods and I send him a quick smile. Shifting into my wolf, I run.

Hours later, I'm still in wolf form, racing towards the pack house. The others will be ahead of me as my warriors would have taken the cars the Rogues arrived in. My thoughts are spiralling from the mouth-watering scent that shocked me into action earlier. Knowing that the only smell that comes close to it is my old mates scent and Mary Berry's brownie recipe, I can't imagine what it could've been. It was definitely a werewolf scent. Maybe it was just a new brand of cologne, right?
'You literally just said it was a werewolf scent, you plonker.'
'Well Luza, what could it be, oh so smart one?' I send my thoughts to her as I internally roll my eyes.
'Oh, I don't know, our mate maybe? It's a Were scent after all, and we never found our second chance mate-'
'-Because he DOESN'T EXIST! Luza, there's no such thing!! Get over it! Why are you so stubborn when it comes to that?'
I feel her anger at me boiling just under the surface as I sit on the damp grass in a clearing.
'One: it's in my nature. Two: your mother? She was your fathers third mate! The first one rejected him, the second died and your mother was the only one to accept him!' Blocking out the small twinge of sadness when Luza mentions my parents, I wait for her to continue. 'Thirdly: I don't know if you managed to get this through you thick human brain, but you know why we didn't hurt when we rejected Matt? BECAUSE HE WASN'T OUR FIRST MATE!'
With that astounding information, Luza blocks me out and leaves me shell shocked, to process that information. Regret and anger fizzes under my skin until the calming rays of the moon caress my fur. Lifting my head, I let out a long, apologetic howl. Silvery rays of moonlight move off me, moving north into the woods. Startled, I jump up and follow them. They stop abruptly in front of another clearing, where there is a prominent smell of Rogues. Sliding back into the shadows, I watch as a motley group of lone wolves mill around, greeting each other. Lone wolves are very different to Rogues. They simply roam around, enjoying a simple life in wolf form, whereas Rogues travel in makeshift packs, having given their lives over to primal instinct and vehemence, though the two share a scent.
I step forward, my neck outstretched, to show that I mean no harm. Eyeing me wearily while I shift, once I stand in human form they seem to visibly relax.
"I was not aware that there was a gathering tonight. I emphasise that I do not mind, but I would appreciate some warning next time." A few wolves nod and I turn my pleasant expression into a graver one. "I would not recommend staying for too long, there is a fairly large of leaderless Rogues wandering around."
Quickly smiling, I shift again and trot away, back toward my pack,

"AMELI!" As soon as I enter the doors to the living room, I am barrelled into by a small ginger whirlwind with glasses. "What the hell were you thinking, I was so worried, are you okay? I smell wolves on you, what have you been doing? Did you get hurt?"
I detach myself from the bone-crushing hug given by my sister, and throw myself onto the sofa.
"Ettie, I'm fine. I ran into a gathering of lone wolves, and no, I didn't get hurt." I rub my hand over my eyes to try to clear the tiredness. She lets down her worried barricade and slumps down next to me. "Besides, young lady, what are you doing still awake?"
"Couldn't sleep."
I nod and grab the remote control. "I'm gonna watch something, you can stay if you want." She snuggles into my side as I choose to watch Divergent on Amazon Prime. Calmed by my presence, Juliette slowly falls into a slumber.
About halfway through, Luke walks through the threshold. He grimaces and glances over his shoulder. I tilt my head questioningly and furrow my eyebrows as he runs a hand through his hair.
"We have a problem"
