"Lia."
Grayson is standing right in front of me in the library. What is he doing here? Was he looking for me? I blush at the thought and look down slightly before looking back up to him.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him as I look to Mrs. Fane that's behind the counter with a huge grin on her face. "Well, he was here buying books—"
"No I wasn't." Grayson is quick to cut her off. I look back to him and grin. "You were buying books?" I tilt my head to the side. Grayson starts ruffling his hair, something I've picked up on whenever he's nervous or stressed. "No." Okay. I don't believe him, but I brush it off and start walking up to Mrs. Fane.
"So, do you have any kids books?" Mrs. Fane nods her head and tells me they're in the middle isle in the back of the library. I start heading there and I feel Grayson's presence behind me. "Why do you need kids books?" I don't answer him, I just keep on walking towards the isle.
I hear him growl behind me and then he grabs my elbow and pulls me around to face him. "Lia. Why do you ne—" His eyes fall down to my lips and his brows narrow down. I suck in a breath when I remember the cut on my lip.
Shoot.
I see his face turn into pure rage and I start to shuffle on my feet.
"I fell." I blurt out before he can say anything. "I was going up the stairs in my complex and I tripped and fell." I fake laugh. "I'm such a klutz." I pray that he believes me, because even though Mr. Stewart gave me the cut on my lip, I don't want him to get in trouble. I don't know what's going in his life. He opens his mouth to say something but before he could, I blurt out another thing, "And as for the kids books, I know a little boy who would love to have them." My upper lip lifts up at the thought of little Milo.
He lets go of my arm hesitantly and I take that as my chance to turn back around and walk down the isle to the kids section. I found some books that I think might help Milo learn how to read and write and I even found a math book. I scoop them up in my arms and start walking back to Mrs. Fane.
"Would that be all dear?" I nod my head at the kind lady as she starts checking out the books. I hope I can use my library points to buy these books or maybe my check. Oh that reminds me, "Do you have my check for me Mrs. Fane?" She looks up at and shakes her head. "You won't get it til next week, Amelia." I look down but nod anyway. How am I gonna buy these books? I about to tell her never mind on the books, but then Grayson drop a hundo on the counter. My eyes almost shoot out of their sockets.
"Gray—"
He gives me a look that immediately shuts me up. I feel terrible that he's always buying me stuff. I don't like when people buy me things.
Mrs. Fane takes the money and eyes up Grayson questionably, but ends up checking out my books and handing me the bag with a smile on her face. "Have a good day dear, I'll see you tomorrow." I smile back at the kind lady and turn back to Grayson.
He takes my hand in his and pulls me out of the library and to next door where the bakery is. Grayson orders me the same thing even though I told him I'm not hungry.
We're now sitting at the same booth with the untouched cake in front of me.
"Eat."
