[10] Illness

You heavily sighed as you looked around, perking your fox ears to take in anything suspicious.

It had been another week since you've left the city, another week since you've spent your time with the guys — avoiding anyone who could be from the clans and now the fatui.

Apparently now the fatui was involved in whatever Baal had in mind, trying to get you to come back and well, keep you from leaving Inazuma.

After the short serious talk with Dainsleif and Thoma you had, things were kind of...weird.

You know how they can get and being protective and all that but it was getting too much. You appreciate it but sometimes they just won't leave your side.

Another thing was that look Dainsleif had given you when he and Thoma discussed what was going on. You knew there was something they or he, wasn't telling you. With Thoma he seemed fine.

So now here you are, quietly walking with the guys trailing behind you on guard and with you as their ears and eyes in this situation.

Earlier there was a patrol of fatui around and despite them being way far out from where they're normally from, they were in Inazuma, trying to find you.

"Do you see anyone else?" Thoma came to your side, whispering softly.

You shake your head and continued walking.

Dainsleif quietly huffed out and yawned. He wasn't going to admit it but he was losing sleep and desperately wanted nothing but to sleep right now.

Only reason due to that was his nightmares he's been having — you didn't know, nor did you need to. Not yet at least.

"Not gonna lie," you whispered looking around, "I'm already tired of being discreet."

"Tell me 'bout it. We still got a long way to-" Thoma stopped midway when you tugged at his shirt frantically.

You rushed to Dainsleif's side when you heard him fall to the ground — Thoma rushing up and looking down at Dainsleif's pained, flushed face.

From the looks of it, he was already getting worse and his face slowly becoming shiny from sweat from his hairline — it was his arm.

You looked down at his arm, turning it to examine it when it was rapidly glowing blue from the vein markings he has covering his whole right arm.

"We need to get him away from here and back to the cave."

"You know we can't do that Thoma. Look at him, he looks bad already."

"Fine. Stay here, I'll try to find another hiding spot."

Dainsleif was mumbling incoherent words only catching a few.

He seemed he was having a nightmare, a really bad one if he scrunched up his face and suppressing low groans. There were a few times he's gotten sick but this? This was completely different.

You carefully lifted Dainsleif's head and put it down on your lap, looking around alert with your ears perked up to pick up the littlest of sound.

It took ten minutes till Thoma was making his way over to you and rushing to help you pick the blonde up, huffing to get to whatever place Thoma picked.

"Can you get some water? I'm going to try to heal or do what I can to ease his pain." Looking up to see your friend standing up to head out again.

You looked back down at Dainsleif and took a deep breath, exhaling and went to unbutton his shirt. The blue glowing veins were spreading to his shoulder and chest.

The sound of his breathing becoming shallow and faint caused worry settling in your stomach.

A glowing purple light emitted from your hands as you placed them down onto his right arm, trying to ease the pain. Good thing you learned how to aid people when you got taken in by the clan.

Sighing and clenching your jaw, you scooted closer to the man and continued easing Dainsleif's pain hoping his fever would at least die down.

It didn't.

His fever was still the same, maybe even more and Thoma kept going back and forth to a river to get new water to help cool him down.

"Don't overwork yourself y/n, you need to rest too."

Thoma looked at you with worry but you shook your head, sniffing. "I can't take a break, his fever hasn't even gone down since we got here." You explained, hoping he would drop it.

He sighed hoping he could help but he didn't have much medical or experience as you did.

After some time the glow from your hands were slowly getting dim, shit — you still needed to push through and it was finally helping Dainsleif's fever to go down.

You finally managed to keep his fever down after what felt like years, huffing out and looking at the man's tired look.

Thoma was looking at you with worry. He motioned you over and you nodded tiredly — laying your head on his lap as he placed a hand in your hair to play with it like old times, like when you were kids.

His touches made you incredibly sleepy and thus, sleep overcame you.

__

Morning came and the sounds of birds chirping outside woke you up, groaning as you tried blinking away the sleepiness.

Your head was laying on what seems to be Thoma's jacket and finally opening your eyes to see his face, few inches away from yours sleeping. You froze just looking at his sleeping face, noticing how messy his dark blonde hair was.

It made you smile. It was just like old times whenever you two had sleepovers when you guys were kids.

You sat up looking around and saw Dainsleif still asleep. He didn't look too bad now that his fever was gone,  but you still had to make sure his breathing wasn't bad either.

Scooting over and making sure you were quiet as possible — making your way to sit on your knees to kneel beside his face, you slowly close the gap and softly pressed your head against his chest.

The soft gentle breaths Dainsleif gave out seemed normal, nothing too bad or sickly but it would be better safe than sorry not to check how he's feeling.

While you were checking his breathing was doing well, you didn't notice he was wide awake he was keeping still. You kept your head there for a few seconds for safe measures until you felt a hand on your hip.

You got up with wide eyes, blinking and seeing that Dainsleif was staring back at you. His hand was still on your hip, unmoving but you didn't shrug it off — staring back at him.

"Mornin'"

His cerulean eyes never faltered from yours, if you were a stranger you wouldn't have noticed the corner of his lips quirk up to a slight smirk.

"Morning... how're you feeling? Ya hungry?" You hope you didn't look flustered.

"Mm, I feel like shit but yeah I'm hungry," he hummed and blinked, slowly sitting up. "Hope you got rest, I know you were tryin' to keep my fever down." He slightly frowned furrowing his brows.

"I did get some rest but I'm glad your fever is gone. Also, wanna tell me why your arm was acting up?"

He looked down at his right arm and closed his eyes, not wanting to explain himself.

"Don't really know why it was," he lied but continued, "It doesn't hurt or anything if that's what you meant."

You hum and nodded, giving a side glance at him studying him and turning away. You got ingredients to cook up some food and after that was done, you and Dainsleif went outside to let Thoma sleep some more.

It was nice being outside but you couldn't shrug off the feeling of being watched. It left a weird feeling in your stomach.
