i plopped down at the gryffindor table at breakfast. i started grumpily filling my plate with food. the boys all looked at me, james eventually deciding to say something.
"what's got you in a mood?" he asked, taking another bite of bacon.
"i have to find a dress for the ball," i groaned.
"...and?" remus asked, raising his brows.
"and i doubt i'm going to find something at any of the shops in hogsmeade, and there's not enough time for my mom to send me one from home. i might just not even go to the dance," i pouted.
"no, you have to go," sirius said, a little too quickly. i looked up at him quizzically. "well, you know, we all said we would go together. you can't break our pact." he gave me an unconvincing smile, and i glanced back down at my plate.
"yeah, we'll help you find a dress!" james cheered jauntily. i looked up at him.
"we will?" remus asked wearily.
"yes," james spoke defiantly.
"are you sure?" i asked, looking at all the boys. "i don't want to waste your time."
james nodded. "we'll all be there. right guys?" he asked, looking at the three other marauders. sirius nodded with a big smile.
"i suppose," remus spoke.
"why not," peter shrugged in agreement.
i laughed a little. "you guys could afford to sound a little more excited."

the five of us walked into a decent sized dress shop in hogsmeade, despite my worries that we wouldn't find anything. we split up and started looking at the racks of dresses. i flipped through a rack, grabbing some along the way. i looked up when i heard a voice.
"oi! y/n! what about this one?" james lifted up the skimpiest black dress i've ever seen. i shot him a glare.
"nice try, you git."
the rest of us continued looking through the dresses. we converged after we felt we had picked out all the nice ones. james had a few, some cute and some still a bit on the risqué side that i figured i would try anyway, remus picked out a few simple ones, peter's taste honestly wasn't great, and sirius had just one. he handed it over to me.
"it was the only one i saw that seemed good enough for you, but what do i know?" i think his cheeks got a little pink, but it might have just been the lighting in the shop. he was normally so smooth, but he was acting strange today. i looked at the dress.
"wow, it's actually my favorite so far. good choice," i smiled. he grinned back.
we all headed to the back of the store where the dressing rooms were. there were a few benches that the boys sat on outside of the small cubicle i went into, closing the silky curtain behind me. i hung all the dresses up, and it seemed like there were way too many to try on. i put the first one on. it was one of the ones remus picked out. it wasn't terrible, but it really wasn't all that great either. i stepped out in front of the boys. they all looked at me silently. i stood with my hands on my hips after a few moments of silence went by.
