Mikan was pacing in front of the hospital. Nagito was three hours late for his afternoon meds. She had called Nekumaru, and he left Hajime around 8:30 in the morning. He didn't tell her much, just that things had not gone well at all. The only thing that gave her a little bit of peace of mind was that Fuyuhiko had not been seen since this morning either. So where ever Nagito was, at least he wasn't alone.
I don't know how to treat him for his psychological problems. She thought as she paced. I have to request back up from the Future Foundation. Just add it to the list of supplies, one psychologist please.
Ibuki came from around the corner, waving her arms frantically. "Ibuki has found them!" She said enthusiastically.
Mikan looked around but did not see them. "W...where a...are they?" She asked.
"Oh, passed out by the bridge." Ibuki said.
"P...pp...passed out?" Mikan asked, concerned.
"Yep. Drunk off their asses!" Ibuki laughed.
Mikan didn't waste another second on the conversation, and took off running towards the bridge. She reached them in minutes. Quickly checking Nagito for a pulse. As she suspected, it was very weak and his breathing was shallow. She pulled a syringe from her pockect and counted to three before stabbing it directly into Nagito's chest. There was a gasp of air from his lungs and then he sat upright, his eyes wildly scanning the area around him.
"I had the strangest dream." He said smiling.
Mikan reached out and slapped him as hard as she could across the face. "You could have died!" She screamed at him. All of the noise had woken Fuyuhiko, who sat up slowly rubbing his temples, and squinting into the the afternoon sun. Mikan turned to him, "You are an idiot!" She said also slapping him.
"What's with her?" Fuyuhiko asked with a shrug.
"Ah," Nagito said quietly. "You see, she figured out that I was trying to give myself alcohol poisoning." He said as if he were talking about the weather. "Unfortunately, I forgot about the fact that she actually keeps track of my meds." The wounds from his attempt this morning had started to bleed as well.
Mikan tried to lift him but failed. "I need your help." She said, slapping Fuyuhiko in the back of the head. He got to his feet, and went to the other side of Nagito, placing one arm around his waist. When Nagito was standing, Mikan noticed the blood on his stomach. Lifting his tshirt, she saw the jagged cuts. "Well the good thing is that the alcohol slowed the
flow of blood as well."
They walked the rest of the way to the hospital in silence. Nagito felt worse now than when he left Hajime. His damn luck would not let him die. If he has lost Hajime for good, then life has no purpose. That is the ultimate despair. Even without Hope, my heart will keep on beating no matter what I try.
Mikan had left the room untouched from this morning. And as soon as his wounds were bandaged, he was told that he would be staying a few more nights. He heard the door lock behind her as she left the room with Fuyuhiko.
"W....what happened?" Mikan asked as she reached for the keys to lock the door behind her.
"I'm not sure how to describe what took place in that room, to be honest." He said looking down at the floor. "It was great at first. They were so glad to see each other...Then Hajime just...changed." He looked up to see her staring back through the door.
"Ch...changed?" She asked.
"As soon as I took the chain off of his arm, Hajime attacked him. Tried strangling him." Fuyuhiko was wiping the blood, Nagito's Blood, from his hands. "He was changing moods in seconds...Not just moods, his whole personality was different." He looked in the small window to see Nagito starting a new stack of cups. "He warned us." He said quietly. "How has he dealt with this alone for so long?" He shook his head and looked at her sadly.
"H...he Wasn't al...alone." She said, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." He said. "He had Hajime." He turned to look at her again. "Now he doesn't even have that. I am such an idiot."
"Yes, you are. " she said quietly. "But you are a good friend. To both of them."
"I just don't know how to help him." He looked down at his blood stained hands. "Either of them."
There was a loud crashing noise from inside the room that made both of them jump. Mikan fumbled with her keys to open the locked door. The sound continued to get louder. Fuyuhiko looked through the small window again, and saw something heavy fly past him.
Mikan got the door unlocked only to have it blocked by the food tray on the other side of the door. She slid down to the floor and pushed it away with a kick. Nagito was standing near the open bathroom door throwing everything he could grab at the mirror. "You're nothing! Absolute trash! Die! Why can't you just die?" He screamed at his reflection.
Fuyuhiko ran in past Mikan and hugged Nagito from behind. "Stop!" He yelled. Nagito crumpled onto the floor and sobbed. Fuyuhiko remained in place, rocking back and forth trying to calm him down. "You are not trash." He whispered. "You are so loved." He continued. Mikan came up from behind with a syringe and plunged the needle into Nagito's arm. He jerked up at the pain and realization that he had just been sedated. He used his last bit off strength to throw Fuyuhiko off of him.
"You're wrong! No one can possibly love trash like me...it's about time that I accept that." He said looking past both of them, to the framed picture of Hajime and him. It was the one from his cottage. Mahiru took it at the beach, both of them smiling brightly, so in love, so oblivious to the horrors that awaited them. It had fallen to the floor during his rampage. The glass was cracked, leaving a jagged edge sticking out of the frame. Nagito lunged forward and grabbed the glass shard, cutting his hand in the process.
Fuyuhiko scrambled to his feet reaching out, but failing to get to it before him. "Nagito! Stop!" He yelled, as he watched him cut two long stripes in both arms, then proceeding to carve a heart into his chest.
Nagito dropped the glass onto the floor, watching silently as his blood flowed onto the white tile floor. He looked up, smiling through the tears. "Tell Hajime, no matter what, I will always love him." At that, he fell foward into Fuyuhiko's waiting arms.
