"I have Hope on my side." Hajime said looking into the mirror. "This will work."

"Do you have payment?" Akira asked from the doorway.

Hajime looked down at his left hand. The portable hard drive felt heavier than he remembered.  "I'm sorry, dear friend.  Your services are required to save him once again."  He whispered.

"Payment is required, whether or not this works."  Akira moved slowly into the room. "Unless, of course, you have had a change of heart."

"I understand." Hajime said turning towards them.  He reached out the shaky hand with the hard drive in it.  "What are you going to do with him?"

"I don't think you would understand." Akira said, taking it from him. "I need to analyze the code, and from there, I will know if what I wish to do is even possible."

"So this isn't like for world domination or anything, right?" Hajime said with a smile. In all honesty, he really didn't care. As long as he had a chance to be with Nagito again, he would have done anything.

"No, nothing that exciting." Akira said with a little chuckle. "Just a chance to reclaim that which is lost." They looked at the hard drive in their hand as if it were a living thing. "I'm not opposed to the idea of you changing your mind, you know."

Hajime shook his head. "No." He said quietly. "I can not bear to live without him."

Akira lowered their eyes. "Very well. Uta has everything set up in the next room." They looked away, trying to find a reason to speak. "How will you explain it?"

"I have no idea." Hajime said in a monotone cadence, almost identical to Izuru's normal way of speaking. "Either this works, or I never surface again." He looked up into Akira's eyes again. The pain in them reflected his own perfectly.

They walked in silence to the next room. Uta stood next to a table with a life-sized replica of Nagito. It wasn't an exact copy. It was a good 5 centimeters too short for one thing. The hair was much too neat, and it was smiling.

"Did you bring the item?" Uta asked sweetly. She already knew the answer. She could plainly see the faded and tattered green coat that was draped across his arm.

"Yes."  He said, stroking the soft fabric with his fingertips. Reluctantly, he extended his arms thrusting the coat towards her.

Uta lowered her head as she took it from him. She turned to Akira. "Has payment been rendered?"  She asked.

"Aye." They said quietly, looking at the floor.

"Very well. Then we will begin." She slowly approached Hajime, taking his hand as she did. "I can not undo this once it is done." She said, stroking the back of his hand. "No one can." She looked up at Akira, smiling.  "Are you certain this is what you desire?"

Hajime did not answer. He simply nodded his head.

"This is a verbal contract." She whispered. "I need a verbal agreement." She squeezed his hand, moving in closer. "I want to remind you, that you have one last chance to back out of this."  She tugged lightly on his arm, bringing him down to her level.  He was crying again. Not surprising, since he had lost the love of his life a little over a week ago.  "Please, reconsider."  Without thinking, she wrapped her small arms around his neck. "He will live on within the hearts of those who loved him." She whispered in his ear. "This life is nothing but pain."

He pulled back slightly, looking into her golden eyes.  His tears now drying in streaks on his cheeks. "Yes." He said finally.

"As you wish." She said quietly, as he stood up once again.

Akira moved to the other side of the table, looking down at their creation. It was not perfect. There were noticeable differences, but it was still remarkable how well it was constructed.

Uta draped the coat across the body and placed a small hand on the urn sitting by its head.  And the other she placed on the doll's forehead.  She looked at Hajime one last time before closing her eyes. She was whispering something incoherent, keeping her voice as low as possible.

Hajime had to let out a little laugh to break the tension he was feeling. Of course this won't work. He thought. I such a fool.   Just then, he saw a tremor from under the coat. It was slight. He had to keep staring, trying to convince himself that he had imagined it. Then it happened again.  Before he knew it, he saw the whole arm as it rose off of the table. It was reaching out for him.  His tears became laughter as he gripped the cold hand in his.

Author's Note:

Sorry this was so short. I didn't want to end it with Nagito's death, but I also wanted it to have a uncertain ending, and this is what my mind came up with in the middle of the night. I am so happy to be finished with it, and sad at the same time.

I'm going to take a little break. Maybe finish some of my one shots that have cropped up in the midst of writing this one. Then I will be hard at work on "This God's World" which is a completely original story. The Story of Akira and Uta.

           Again, thanks for reading. ❤️
