Chapter-5

-Roxy

"Roxy, is everything okay?" Jess nudges my shoulder but I can't find it in myself to speak.

Finally, I manage a few words. "Dad..he's been released."

"W-what?" The rest of the mail drops from Jess' hands. "How? When?"

"A few days ago."

"A few days ago?? He could be anywhere by now! H-he could be here.." She snatches the letter from my hands and reads it herself.

"Woah, woah, woah. What the hell is going on here?" I almost completely forgot Seth was still here until he spoke up.

"Our father..he's been released from prison.."

"And why is that such a bad thing? Don't you wan't to see him?"

"Hell no!" Jess spats before heading inside.

"Jess, calm down. We need to be calm about this," I make my way over to her and Seth follows, gathering the rest of the mail and shutting the door behind.

"What's so bad about him? What did he get arrested for?" Seth places the mail on the counter as we make our way to the kitchen area.

"He murdered our mother." Usually, I don't tell people this. It usually drives them off.

"And he tried doing the same to us!" Jess makes her way to her room and slams the door behind her.

"Why didn't you ever tell me this?" Seth looks over at me.

"It was never your business, you weren't supposed to know."

"I'm pretty sure that qualifies as one of the things you should tell me about." He crosses his arms over his chest.

"And then what? You'd just run for the hills like everyone else." I sit down on the couch in the living room area.

"No I wouldn't." He sits down beside me.

"Why? Why would you stay?"

"Well I don't really have an option in leaving, now do I? Besides, if anyone understands what its like to have a parent in jail, its me." Silence begins to grow between us before he speaks again. "Maybe he's learned from his mistakes and won't come after you guys."

"He has some sick vindetta against us, he's unpredictable. I honestly have no clue what he's going to do."

"Maybe we should call the police."

I shake my head, that's the last thing we need. "Police will attract attention, and I don't wan't this getting out to the press."

"Fine, just be careful," he stands back up from the couch. "I have a party to get back to. See ya around."

"See ya." I watch him leave before leaning back on the couch. As if I didn't have enough things on my mind, this just adds to it.

"What are we going to do?" Jess re-appears from her room and makes her way over to the couch.

"I'm not sure yet. Whatever happens, happens. Just know, I'll keep you safe. I'll always keep you safe." I always have protected her. As the older sister, growing up without parents, it was always my job to, and it still is.

"Thanks." She smiles a little and puts on Netflix on the TV. She scrolls through and picks a movie, something to help keep our minds off the situation.

---------------

We must've dozed off during the movie because its now about 3 a.m., and the noise from Seth's party has lightened a little, but its still going on.

I turn the TV off and take out my notebook to start working on some new songs. So far all I have is a few lyrics.

I won't let this be the end, its not my time
You don't control me, my fate is mine

This is my life, you won't take it away
I'm staying here forever, no matter what you say

A knock on the door interrupts my writinf and I toss the notebook back on the coffee table.

Standing, I make my way to the door. Before I even get there, its kicked in and I scream, falling back. My heart hammers in my chest as my eyes travel up to the man in the doorway. But I don't even need to look to know who it is. Our eyes meet and I remember him like it was yesturday.

Its my father.
