Jake walked through the doors of the school as soon as the bell rang, a look of determination on his face.
The night before he came to the realization that he wasn't gonna get Lisa back by sitting on his butt and crying over her. He had to talk to her and explain his side of the story, no matter how pissed off she was.
As he turned the corner, he spotted the last person he ever wanted to see: Mr.Reed, giving him the meanest glare he'd ever seen in his life.
"Oh...hey Mr.Reed," Jake said awkwardly. "So....how are you doing these days? You look good! Not like George Costanza at all!"
Reed proceeded to flip Jake off, and Jake was only annoyed that he hadn't seen it coming.
Jake continued to walk down the hallway until he reached the door with a periodic table taped to it. Lisa's classroom.
He attempted to peer in, but the window on the door wasn't letting him see much. "Aww, screw it!" he announced as he swung the door open and barged in.
"Jake?"
"Oh, God..." Jake sighed, unable to comprehend why Rachel was standing in front of him and not Lisa. "What are you doing here? This isn't even your classroom! And where the heck is Lisa, anyway?"
"Lisa's doing parent-teacher conferences in the library," Rachel said.
"Damn it! Why do parents who actually care always have to ruin everything?!"
Rachel laughed. "You look nice today," she said, looking over his fitted leather jacket.
Jake made a face. "Nice try, Rachel, but I look nice every day. I see what you're trying to do here..."
"I'm serious," she said, taking a step toward him. "You look nice. You're hair is all curly and messy...it shouldn't look nice, but it does on you."
Jake immediately ran his hand through his hair in an attempt to straighten it out, but it was pointless.
Rachel just giggled. "You really are cute," she said, stepping close to him once again. "...You think I'm cute?"
Jake took a second to look her over, as he wasn't able to completely before due to his being in total shock.
She had on a tight black dress that matched her black hair, which was pushed back by a jeweled headband in a way that framed her face perfectly. The dress she wore left nothing to the imagination when it came to cleavage. Her dark brown eyes pierced him and made him feel jittery, her sly expression made him feel like she knew something that he didn't.
"...'cute' probably wouldn't be the best word for it..."
"What word would you use then, Jake?" she said, her voice low.
"...Rachel," Jake said, sounding exhausted all of a sudden. "We can't do this. We really, really can't do this. I can't do this. I don't want to hurt Lisa. I...I want to get back together with her."
For the first time, he seemed to be getting through to her. She dropped her gaze to the floor and finally backed away from him.
"I'm sorry," she whispered so quietly that Jake could barely hear. "I...I don't know what got in to me. I just...I liked you so much...I don't know. But I'm sorry. I never should have gotten between you and my sister."
"Oh...well, thank you. It's okay," Jake said awkwardly, not sure what exactly to say. He knew he should probably say something, he just had no idea what. "I mean, I might be a little more likely to accept your apology if you teach me about all that financial stuff, but..."
