Auston was coming back into Toronto and he was all you thought about. You were getting ready for your shift tonight and still thought about the message he sent a few days ago. Auston never used pet names with you. You hadn't even hung out outside the hospital, but you knew you were falling for him. Last night, Jack watched some documentary about Auston's life on YouTube. Jack loved Auston more than you did.
It was 6:15pm and you left your apartment for work. You lived in a two bedroom apartment close to the hospital with one of your nursing friends, Ashley. She worked in the ER downstairs. She was the one who admitted Jack the night he came in. Ashley is also close to Jack. She will come see him on her lunch and talk to him.
I looked at my phone just before I went on pre-rounds and saw a message from Auston.
[6:23PM] Auston: Have a good shift darling. Say hi to Jack for me. Come over after your shift. I don't care what time it is, I just want to see you.
Attached below was the address to his apartment near the Scotiabank Arena.
Auston knew how to make my heart melt. You started your pre-rounds on patients and soon forgot about him.
Tonight quickly became one of the toughest nights in your nursing career. Something they don't prepare you for is having the tough conversations with patients about death. Especially with kids. You had just finished taking vitals at 2am when Jack's call bell rang. When Jack rang his call bell, he usually just wanted to see you again. Tonight you walked in and Jack was crying loudly.
"Oh Jack." Your heart sank. "Let me come sit with you." You fixed his blankets and crawled into bed next to him. You engulfed him into a hug. You sat there in silence until Jack broke it.
"Am I dying?" A question you had been asked only a few times as a nurse.
"Sweetheart, if you were dying, you would feel much worse than this. If you were dying, the doctor would be having very big and important conversations with you and your mom and dad."
"What happens when I die?" This comment broke your heart.
"Do you mean what will happen to you?"
"No, like what will happen on earth?"
"Jack, your parents would miss you so much. I would miss you so much."
"Would they ever forget about me?" You tried not to cry.
"No one could forget you, especially not your parents. You'll always be their little boy." We sat in silence and a few tears ran down your face.
"Would Auston remember me?"
"Baby, he would never forget about you. I wouldn't let that happen."
"You should marry him."
"What did you say?" You try and lighten the mood.
"Someone is going to have to take care of you when I'm gone."
"Ok." You waited until he feel asleep before you went to the bathroom to cry.
The rest of your shift seemed to go by fast, but you never forgot about your conversation with Jack. It was 7:20AM by the time your report was given to the day shift. At the beginning of your shift, you were anticipating seeing Auston, but now you just wanted to go home and cry. You decided to still go. You drove to his building and stood in front of his door waiting for him to open it.
The door opened and a half asleep, tall, brunette man stood before you. You didn't say anything, but hug him. "Hi y/n. I missed you so much." He put his head on top of yours.
"I missed you too." You managed to say between sobs.
"What's wrong baby?"
"Just work."
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Yeah."
"Let me get you some clothes so you don't have to sit here in your scrubs." You sat on the couch crying while Auston got you sweatpants and a sweater.
"The bathroom is just down the hall." He pointed to a small hallway dimly lit. You came out of the bathroom absolutely swimming in the clothes he had given you. They smelled like him, which helped calm you down.
"I meant to text you back at the beginning of my shift, but I was busy. I'm so sorry."
"Don't apologize. You have nothing to apologize for." Auston wraps me in his arms on the couch. You began to tell him about the beginning of your shift when everything was fine.
"He was watching some documentary about you. I thought it was cute."
"What him? Or the documentary?" He teased
"Both." you smiled.
"So now you know everything about me, tell me about the rest of your night." He joked.
"Jack was crying. He wanted to know if he was dying." You cried. Auston rubbed your arm.
"He asked if anyone would miss him if he died. He wanted to know if you missed him." You could see Auston about to cry.
"Oh baby." He cried and held you tighter. "Of course I'd miss him."
"He suggested we get married."
"Oh." Auston acted like this was the first time he'd heard this. Jack had told him to marry you before Auston even knew your name. Auston would be lying if he said he never thought about it.
"He told me that someone was going to have to take care of me when he died." You both cried.
"You know he loves you right? This wasn't how I planned asking you, but I asked Jack if we could share you? I want to go out with you, I want to love you forever, I need you by my side. Will you go on a date with me?" You looked up at Auston, wiping the tears from your face.
"Yes."
