"The scariest moment is always just before you start."
Chapter Thirty-One
~Daryl's POV~
I could never admit how happy I was to have everyone back, so I stayed quiet. Hershel and Maggie were so glad to be back with us again..I was too. I glanced at Little Ass Kicker, she had become my everything really. Lori would want us to protect her..I was going to keep that promise. Rick nodded towards me, talking to the rest of the group as they discussed different plans. The other people around us just minded their own buisness, some kids looking at us with wonder. Charlotte was holding Carl's hand, looking at a group of the little ones a few feet from them. She looked up at Carl and after a few minutes, she let go and jogged over to them. They all smiled at eachother, and it didnt take long for them to run around in the dirt giggling and pretending.
I chuckled, being a kid is so much easier than being an adult. Behind me, I could hear the Walkers moaning for the taste of flesh to naw on. I looked to my side and spotted Angel farther from the group. She had her back turned to me and her eyes towards two walkers slamming themselves against the fence. It rattled and dug into their decaying skin as they forced their fingers through the gate. She didnt move much, just stared into space. Her arms were wrapped around her waist, What was she doing?
"Hey Daryl? Were going to head inside, show them our sleeping quarters. You and Angel come in when you want to." Rick called to me, holding the baby closer to his chest. I nodded to him and watched them leave as I walked over to Angel. Those Walkers were starting to get on my nerve. All I wanted to do was drive a blade into their damn skulls..easy. Those dead Assholes need to be gone, they will attract others for all we know. Angel heard me as she turned around and gave me a smirk. I gave her a smirk back and shoved her gently. She laughed as she stumbled and caught herself before she fell. I watched her flip me off as she brushed the dirt off of her shirt.
I looked closer at her and saw the black bags under her eyes. She yawned loudly and rubbed her head. Besides the growls of the undead a couple feet from us, I heard her stomach growling. She gave me a half-smile and turned back to the fence. Something wasnt right, this was the Angel I knew a couple days ago.
"Angel? What's wrong with ya? Yer seem a lil different in my opinion. Somethin' botherin' ya?" I asked, cocking my head. She shook her head without a moment's hesitation. I grunted and grabbed her arm. She protested, but just kept her mouth shut as I drug her to a table set out. I sat her down and stared at her in the eyes. She looked at the ground, her hand gripping her blade she kept with her. I looked around, making sure no one else saw this weapon. Hell if I know what they would do if they saw us withholding a weapon from them.
"You dumbass..hide that knife of yers." I stated, watching her hide it back in her boot. I could tell by her pale skin and bags that she hasnt been eating or sleeping. I knew this because of my childhood. My father wasn't exactly a jolly ole' fellow..he was a complete and utter bitch. Hell, I got lost in the woods once and had to wipe my ass with a leaf. Found my way home, made myself a turkey sandwich. When I was younger, survival was kinda the ordeal for me. I shook my head at her, why is she doing this?
"Look, Your eating something whether yer likin' it er not. Got it?" I said sternly, glaring at her. She looked back at me and shook her head. I growled in annoyance and she tried getting up. I gripped her arm tightly and yanked her back down. She wobbled and planted right back on the seat. She scowled at me and ripped her arm away from me. She crossed her arms and glowered at me.
