                                                          Chapter Twenty-Seven

~Carl's POV~

My heart felt like one of those things had ripped their way into my chest and yanked out my heart. The sick feeling of fear trickled down my spine and made every hair on my body stand up. I felt Angel stiffen next to me and an audible gasp left her lips. We both were already rushing to the shore and the mud squished between our toes as we sprinted out of the water. Glenn and Daryl were already shooting some Walkers  off our heels as they came barging through the treeline. The wind started picking up and my hair blew around in my face as I ran over to the baby.

"G-GIVE ME THE BABY!" I tried shouting over the undead roar of the Walkers as I eagerly reached out for her. Glenn got the message and quickly handed her to me before reloading his gun and shooting off another round of bullets. My breathing was ragged and quick and I looked around frantically for my father. I found him stumbling in the direction of Glenn and Daryl and was releived he wasnt being torn to bits by the infected. I searched for Angel and saw her stabbing a walker through the eye a few feet from me. Everything was going on so fast and my little sister squirmed in my arms. Her cries echoed into my ears and I found my legs running off down the road.

"KEEP GOING CARL! GET HER TO SAFETY!" I heard Angel's voice scream at me and then gunshots went off. I didnt have the choice to decide so I nodded and pumped my legs faster and kicked up rocks as I went. I could hear the moans behind me and that only fueled me to go even faster. Once I had run out of breath, I quickly stopped on my heels and turned around. I could still hear the shouts and shots of pistols but I couldnt see if anyone was hurt or not. I nervously held the baby closer to me and took deep breaths to calm myself. They had to be okay, They had to be okay. I snapped my head up once I heard multiple footsteps scraping along the rocks.

I saw Glenn and Daryl first, both carrying guns and looking over there shoulders every few seconds to shoot a round off. Next was my father who had more blood splattered onto his face and his eyes were wide. My heart was beating rapidly against my ribcage and I could finally breathe when I saw Angel finally coming into view as she shot off some more Walkers before running to us. Her hair dripped with water as it flew behind her and her knee was busted and blood trickled down her leg. Her eyes locked with mine for a split second before she whipped around and popped the head of a walker off a few feet from her.

"K-KEEP GOING! THERES M-M-MORE!" She screamed at us, getting closer and closer with each passing minute. My baby sister cried in my arms and I didnt know what to do. She finally met with us and we all started our running once again. My head was pounding andsweat was running into my eyes as we sprinted down the road. I risked a look behind me and my heart dropped as I saw dozens of walkers stumbling towards us.

"Where did these come from!? Why are therye so many!?" I shouted at the group, hoping to get at least some answers before we were torn to shreds. I felt the baby's feet kicking at my stomach and her cries were getting painfully louder as she shrieked at me. I held her closer to me and tried my best to murmer in her ear. She whimpered and her eyes went wide as she bounced around in my arms. Angel was breathing heavily beside me and she looked over her shoulder at the horde each second. My dad and Daryl were in the front, sprinting their way and hoping we could make it to the "Safe Haven" They have been talking about.

Glenn ran in the middle of us with his gun held high. The fear was easy to see in the group and I just wanted to get to safety. After a few more agonizing miles my feet became numb and my legs throbbed with each step. I could still hear the moans behind us and my breathing was starting to get harder to grasp. Everyone in the group was beginning to lose energy and if we had to go any furthur, we all knew we wouldnt be alive in a few short minutes.

"I-Its got to be just u-up here. I-It has t-to be." Rick shouted back to us, a smile plastered on my fathre's face. I shook my head and sighed, trying to ignore the shocks of pain inflicted on my sides as we ran. I forced myself to go faster as we ran up the hill and my dad suddenly stopped. I stumbled to a stop and made sure my sister was safe in my arms. We all looked at Daryl and Rick like they were crazy. Why did we stop!? Dont they know that there is a horde of flesh eating people right behind us!? I finally walked up to them and looked over their shoulders to see what they were staring at.

"Whoa.....so it is real...." I whispered, my eyes casting slowly over the high fences wrapped in barbed wire and the many poeple standing guard outside with guns placed firmly in their hands. I heard Angel coming up quickly behind me and she tugged on my arm eagerly to get us going again.

"If you all havent noticed yet, there is still a horde right behind us! RUN!" She screamed at us, her hand wrapped tightly around my wrist. I kept my eyes on the building in front of us..it was another school. This time, this school was bigger and had two buildings connected to it. The perimeter was surrounded with spiked fences and ditches in the front. The windows were all blacked out and boards were nailed onto it to hide what was on the inside. I looked at all the people inside the fences, who all looked so safe and happy in their own little world.

The rest of the group screamed out for help as we rushed to the front gates and it didnt take long before people started to notice us. People by the gates didnt waste any time forcing the doors open and letting us all cram ourselves inside. Once we were all inside, the doors were quickly sealed shut again just in time for the horse to bash themselves against the defenses. They growled angrily at us and the stench of rotting flesh filled the air. I wanted to gag as one girl shoved her face through the fence, ripping and tearing the tender green flesh stick stuck onto her bones.

Black and thick blood oozed from her torn jaw as she growled and clawed at the metal to get to us. I looked down and was surprised when I saw my sister watching the monsters. Her eyes were wide and her little hands were clutching to my stained shirt as the growls and sneers from them scared her. I gently placed my hand over her eyes and turned around so she wouldnt have to watch them anymore. My father and Daryl were on their knees gasping for air as they coughed and sputtered. Glenn was in shock as he stared all around him at the civilization. I was cautious though, throughout the time, we havent been treated exactly as people.

Angel was silent beside me and her grip on my wrist tightened as a group of people walked up to us. There were 3 of them, two girls and one boy. They all looked roughly around 20 or higher with guns strapped to them and one pointed at us. That automatically set off everyone as my group pointed their guns back at them. The others around us gasped or stood there to watch what was unfolding. The guy from thier group stepped up to us and lowered his gun to the ground. The other two did the same but we on the other hand did not. The guy had short, buzzed, black hair and bright green eyes.

He gave us a smile and held both of his hands up to show us he meant no harm. I clutched my sister closer to me and his eyes softened when he saw her. My dad cautiously put down his gun in the pile and walked up to the guy. They stared at eachother for a moment before shaking hands. I looked over at Angel and saw her glaring at the group with her pistol tightly gripped in her hands. I knew she wasnt the one to trust different people, and I was starting to too. Glenn and Daryl put their guns down and shook hands with the man, leaving it to me and Angel to do it too.

"They could be just like the rest, I dont trust them." Angel sneered at them through clenched teeth and her finger was slightly on the trigger. The guy nodded his head and slowly walked up to us. He looked at my sister before looking at me and Angel.

"I understand you might not be able to trust us, but we are going to keep you guys safe. Anyone is welcome here and we are willing to do whatever it takes to gain that trust." His voice was warm and friendly but I knew Angel wasnt buying it. He gave us one last smile before stepping aside and signaling us to look at the safe place we were going to be living at for awhile.

"Welcome newcomers.....Welcome to The Safe Haven."
