"In every shadow, there is light. In every tear, there is a smile. In death, I know there is still life that lingers for awhile."

                                                               Chapter Fourteen

~Carl's POV!~

"Sweetie? You need to calm down. They've only been gone for about an hour." My mother was trying to convince me everything was okay, but she couldn't just lie through her teeth and expect me to believe it. I eventually ignored her and she gave up on trying to get me talk. No one knew what happened outside of this prison just a few short hours ago. No one knew I betrayed possibly the love of my life, I destroyed someone who was already so broken. Rick, my dad, was starting to pace in a line around the room, making everything edgy and nervous. I was about to snap when I heard screaming outside.

"Is that Alice?" I asked, watching as everyone rushed outside. I followed hot on there heels and burst outside. I was hoping to see Angel standing next to her, her crossbow in her hand and a couple squirrels and supplies in the other. No one was next to Alice though, it was just thin air. Alice's hair was naughted and messy, dirt and blood smudged onto her face and clothes. The blood was glistening in the sun, indicating it was a fresh shot. What puzzled me was the color, it was red, dark red. It wasn't a Walker's blood, it wasn't black and oozing, thick and mucky. It was the color of a human being's blood. She was sobbing and she collapsed, dropping Angel's crossbow in the process.

"Oh my God! Alice, what happened!?" Lori screamed, holding her close to her. Alice instantly buried her head into her shoulder and started crying harder. Her hands were shaking too hard to be normal, and her cries sounded off.

"M-M-Me and Angel.... w-we were running away....t-t-there were too many for both of u-us. She d-d-distracted them w-w-while I ran. W-When I looked b-back....." She let out a hoarse scream and tears were running down her face. My heart seemed to explode right out of my chest at that moment. I struggled to catch my breath that had been stolen from me. I stumbled over my feet and ended up on my hands and knees. The feeling of guilt had become too much and I started coughing. I ended up hacking breakfast up and sweat was dripping down my face. I heaved a few more times before sitting back on my knees. A groan escaped my mouth and i was overcome by sadness.

Angel is gone, she's all gone. She's dead, she's dead, she's dead! I gripped my head in my hands and a whimper came out of me. I shook my head back and forth until I was dizzy. I looked at the ground with blurry eyes and watched teardrops make dark dots in the dirt below me. I didn't even get to talk to her, to apologize for such a horrible thing I had done. Now she's gone and I can never get her back. The relization of her gone hadn't yet hit me, or I would have been in a ball on the ground screaming and breaking down. I wiped my eyes and something inside me snapped. I became numb of all feeling, just staring at Alice crying in Lori's arms. Lori was sobbing too, a few tears even going down Rick's face.

I looked at Andrea and saw her frown, her eyes glossy with tears. Maggie was screaming and large tears rolled down her face as Glenn held onto her. Hershel was looking at the ground, all of us struggling not to break down. Daryl was just standing there..not saying anything.

"A-Are you sure she is.... dead?" Rick asked, sadness in his voice. I watched as Alice wiped her soaked face before nodding her head and breaking down in Lori's arms once again. Time had stopped it seemed, no one knew what to do. We all stayed in the courtyard for who knows how long, before the chill of nightfall fell upon us. We all silently made it inside and Rick ordered everyone to get some rest. I knew I couldn't sleep, so I just trudged up the stairs and into my cell. I slammed the bars shut and didn't even flinch as it rattled and echoed through the prison. I heard soft crying, then some more, and I knew it was from the girls below. I haven't seen Daryl ever since Alice came back, he wasn't the one for emotional stuff.
