New York City in the winter was something that always calmed you, even in all the hustle and bustle. You always appreciated the way the streets got covered in powdery snow and even the people who were skating at Rockefeller Center, as touristy as that was.

New York had become your home a few months back, having moved from Quantico, Virginia. You left for a better job opportunity. You left behind your friends, family and coworkers.

You left Aaron Hotchner behind.

Aaron was your partner at BAU. In the time that you two spent together, you realized just how strong and courageous he was, especially in the field when he would put himself in harm's way with no questions asked if it meant that he was protecting you or someone else on the team.

But as you spent time with him, you learned that deep down, he was a big ol' softie; someone who enjoyed lazy days in the pool, spending nights curled up with you next to the fireplace in his apartment, and someone who when he loved someone, he loved them with his entire heart.

He was just like you in that last sense. You loved Aaron. He loved you. Hell, you still loved him. The love that you two shared was genuine, something that you only would have believed to exist in books or movies.

And you were happy that you were his for two years before things changed.

You didn't want to end things. You always wanted to be by his side. But the love you two held near and dear was the kind that was the right person, wrong time.

Aaron had been promoted to the BAU Unit Chief after the current chief had retired. You were thrilled for Aaron. Ecstatic even. He deserved it more than anyone on the team. He busted his ass off from the day you first met and you couldn't imagine him not getting that position.

Only a month after Aaron was promoted, you had been too. But your position was in the New York field office. You debated for a while as to whether or not you should take it. And Aaron, being the loving boyfriend and partner, encouraged you to go. He didn't want to hold you back from something that at the end of the day was much better than your position in the BAU.

You both were determined to make things work. Sometimes, you would travel back to Virginia to see him or other times he would come out to you. And it worked for a few months.

It wasn't the same as being wrapped in his arms each and every night. Every time you left him at the airport, you felt like your heart was breaking even more than it had the last time. He was the person that you wanted in your life at all times.

As much as you didn't want to admit it to yourself, your conscience was telling you that it was over.

When you told Aaron that you wanted to end things, you could still see the way his face completely broke in front of you. You still heard the way his voice was wavering, even after 6 months apart.

You told yourself that it was for the better. You convinced yourself that you would be able to cope and deal with the broken heart that you inevitably inflicted upon yourself.
