"What the fuck are these" I gesture to the bowl of cereal that Cap pushed towards me, the vaguely pink milk sloshing slightly.
"Lucky charms!" He said with hopeful enthusiasm, "I've found they cheer me up after a tough break" A tough break... damn. I pushed past him to the stairs, deciding against looking back before ascending to the upper levels.
"Welcome, Deadpool's sister" JARVIS spoke over the speakers as my face was scanned to enter the lab. I rolled my eyes as I crossed the threshold, despite my genuine anger at Tony and the rest, I had to admit, that was kind of funny.
"Hey Jarvis!" I called out as I made my way over to the closest table, "you promise you're not planning to overthrow us and condemn mankind?"
"Not in the foreseeable future Ma'am" Jarvis replied, matching my humor, precisely as his wiring instructed.
"Okay cool. Don't get me wrong, I'm chill with that, I'd just like a bit of warning" I shot back with the driest of tones.
"Are you off your medication again Ma'am?" He replied, clearly not sure if I was serious.
"I was joking, chill" I defended, not expecting the personal attack. Something caught my eye as I fiddled with the various wires that decorated the countertop. Making my way over to the pedestal near the center of the room, I looked more closely at the strange metal-like substance that rested there.
"Vibranium" A deep voice sounded behind me, the unfamiliar accent sparked my curiosity, this voice was entirely new, and in my line of work, that generally wasn't a good sign.
I turned around slowly, keeping a cautious hand on the knife at my hip, only to stop short when a blade met my palm.
"Stand down Okoye" the deep voice warned as I felt the blade retract, allowing me to turn fully as the two figures came into view. The deeper voice was clearly coming from the one on the left, about four inches taller than me, he didn't exactly look like the kind of person I should fuck with, especially with the claw-like chain that encircled his throat. However, as foreboding as he may be, I was far more intimidated by the woman at his side. "Relax, we are with the Avengers"
"Oh yeah I figured, I'm good, it's just" I turned to the woman on the right, "You're so... cool, like, I'm not sure how else to describe it, you're just... woah." Okay if I'm being entirely honest, I was not supposed to say that out loud. Mercifully, Cap entered the lab shortly after.
"I see you've met our guests" Steve gestured to the pair, "This is King T'challa of Wakanda"
"Ah shit do I gotta bow or something... curtsy perhaps?" I quickly mocked an overly-dramatic curtsy, nearly falling over in the process. After a quick look of what seemed to be pity, from Cap, he continued.
"I was just going to let you know that Thor made some sort of soup so if you want some.." he simply faded out, gesturing towards the stairs to the kitchen in order to convey the rest of his sentence. I just nodded, brushing past him and heading down to the kitchen.
Once everyone had a bowl of what I believe was supposed to be French onion soup, we sat on the assorted furniture scattered around the space. After some prolonged slurping, Thor spoke up.
"Why is the midgardian mad?" I stared daggers into my soup until Thor nudged me
"I'm not mad"
"You most definitely are, I am very good at this type of thing. Reading situations and what not" Thor looked oddly proud of himself, it seemed almost cruel to break that spell.
"You don't know do you" I asked, still refusing to look up from my soup
"Know what?" Despite his bragging, he was still woefully unaware of where this was going
"She was with Wade, at the Hydra facility" Tony chimed in, also keeping his gaze away from the team's
"I don't understand" Thor questioned, his joviality leaving with every word.
"She was captured with Wade, they were both in Siberia along with Barnes... I made the difficult call to leave her behind in order to secure Wade's return." The loudest silence I have ever had the misfortune to experience filled the room, feeling as if it was suffocating me.
"You said you hadn't located her yet" Nat spoke up, addressing her comment to Tony, but quickly meeting my gaze, fury and slight sadness filling her eyes.
"It was the safest option, Wade knew about the twins, if they got that information, months of work would have gone down the drain." Tony's voice was climbing, he was clearly covering his regret with layers of feigned confidence. The scotch in his hand wasn't helping either.
I broke the shocked silence with a small snicker, finally looking up to meet Tony's fiery glare, "The safest option" I repeated, "leaving me to be brainwashed was the safest option?" I kept my tone calm as I slowly stood up, "fine" I pushed past Tony's efforts to retain me as I made my way back towards the stairs, just before I reached the first step I though of one last thing, "You know, I'm not some child that you need to protect, you've all been tip-toeing around me for days now like I might explode at any fucking moment." I fought the urge to raise my voice, but at the second I said fuck everyone's eyes twitched to Cap for a split second, just enough for me to catch the small sigh that followed.
"Yeah, it kinda sucked, I kinda thought I could trust you guys, but whatever, okay? It's fine, I'm over it, just stop acting like my poor widdle feewings are irreparably hurt. I even got a new friend so it's really not that big of a deal." With that I awkwardly stood there as they all nodded or made small sounds of acceptance. Finally, I gave a curt nod to Thor before retreating back up the stairs, "good soup."
I've never seen such a mighty being instantly dissolve into a teddy bear of a man at the mere thought of culinary success.
