Carlos sighed.
It had been another unsuccessful day. No one wanted a smelly 13-year-old homeless boy working for them, even if he did have abilities. There was nothing special about abilities anymore, everyone had them.
Having abilities was just normal.
There were still a few without abilities, but that is quickly fixed with technology. Besides, there were laws against anyone working under the age of fifteen.
Carlos trudged his feet along, kicking at the dirt. He was in the abandoned part of the city, or that's what people wanted you to think.
It has become a refuge for people like him, who had no other place left. The only reason it was considered abandoned was that everyone here had to hide. They didn't want 'them' to find out where all the homeless and runaways hid. They never showed any signs that anyone was here, and that's how it was liked.
Carlos groaned as he kicked his feet. He was thinking about the reason he and his sister were alone in the first place. Just because of the abilities they possessed.
Having abilities now might not be rare, but there are still rare abilities. The ones that are considered a myth. The abilities that can cause the most damage if needed. Each one of them is just as dangerous as the last.
Teleportation, mind-control, weapon conjuring, time travel, and the ability to create abilities are said to not exist entirely.
The last time someone had these abilities, they were hunted down, tortured, and forced against their will to use these abilities for evil.
The stories claimed none of these ability users would ever live past twenty.
"Carlos?" A quiet voice whispered.
Carlos whipped his head up, his fight-or-flight instincts kicking in. He sighed when he realized who it was.
It was just his little sister, Sammy.
She was standing in the doorway of an abandoned warehouse, most likely from some rich company that forgot they even owned the building. She was holding a ratty old stuffed unicorn in her hands and looking at Carlos with relief in her eyes.
"I'm coming Sammy, just get back inside," Carlos said as he ushered his sister back into the warehouse, and closed the door behind them.
"Can we have some light, Sammy?" Carlos asked his younger sister, stretching and finally allowing himself to relax.
She nodded, lifted her hand, and a little ball of teal blue light escaped her fingers. Sammy smiled, proud of her accomplishment to control her abilities.
Carlos smiled and ruffled her hair, causing her to swat his hand away.
"How was it?" Sammy asked hopefully, the little light bobbing along by her head.
"No luck," Carlos said sadly, setting his bag down, "I got turned away again."
Sammy's smile faded, her little ball of light glowing just a little bit dimmer.
"I'm sorry," Sammy sighed, Carlos looking at her confused, "I could always try to help. I could go out and get food! Everyone always likes to give me free food!"
Carlos smiled sadly at Sammy's hope-filled face. Carlos would love to have her come with him, but he did not want to risk 'them' finding them together.
"It's fine Sammy, I've got this covered," Carlos thought of an idea, "How about we play 'fight-the-dirt'? Like the good old times?"
"Sure!" Sammy exclaimed, "That was always mom's favorite game!"
