Sammy was sitting on the couch, tears streaming down her cheeks.
How could this have happened?
When Sammy had gotten back with Taylor, they found Kat and Xylein running frantically. When they noticed they were back, they shakily explained what had happened.
Sammy felt her heart stop and break into a million tiny pieces.
Kat and Xylein said Carlos wasn't in the car when they got back. They said the car had a few new dents and they couldn't find him anywhere. They have been trying to find clues as to where Carlos could have gone, but there wasn't anything there to say where Carlos went. It was like he disappeared into thin air.
Everyone searched everywhere for Carlos. They even went as far as calling out on the streets. Some stopped and asked if they were looking for their dog, but none of them bothered when they heard they were searching for a thirteen-year-old boy. They for some reason started assuming that it was another case of a teenage boy running away from home because he wanted to try something new.
Sammy knew Carlos better than that.
The few people who did express concern said that a bunch of people had stopped to help check up on a thirteen-year-old that was passed out in a car. They said that a lady showed up, calling the boy Carlos and claiming to know his cousin. Everyone went about their business when they saw that the boy was okay.
Everyone returned home brokenhearted.
Kat kept mumbling that he must have been found by the U.G.U. That did not help any of them and Xylein to explode at his negative cousin, refusing to think that they would be able to find Carlos so easily after so many years.
Sammy felt her heart fall every time any of them brought up different things that could've happened to Carlos. Carlos said that bad people were after the two of them. That must be the U.G.U... Whatever that means.
They finally called it a day when it started to get dark out and returned to the apartment defeated. Sammy didn't speak a word. Not in the car. Not in the hall. Not even when Kat tried to get her to talk about her day with Taylor. Nothing could cheer up the poor girl as she just sat on the couch clutching her unicorn tightly.
Taylor sat next to Sammy and hugged her, gently rubbing her back in a comforting manner. She felt her heart clench at the thought of already being torn away from her childhood best friend when she had just finally reunited with him after so many years of being apart.
Kat was in the kitchen, running her hand through her hair as she mindlessly walked back and forth. Her eyes had a slight orange tint to them, showing just how worried she was for the newest member of their make-shift family.
Xylein was pacing back and forth in the living room. He couldn't help but feel personally responsible. He was the one who thought it would be safer for Carlos to stay in the car. He didn't think this would happen. He couldn't keep out the terrible thoughts of what the U.G.U. could be doing to the poor boy.
Kat glanced around at her family and groaned seeing their faces.
"Why would someone take him?" Kat asked out loud, wanting to end this terrible feeling in her chest.
"It's obvious why," Taylor replied, still holding on to Sammy, "For a way to Sammy and/or to get a hold of Carlos's abilities."
That caught Kat and Xylein's attention.
"I thought Carlos didn't have abilities?" Kat asked, joining them all in their living room area.
"He does, but he hates his abilities so much," Taylor explained, running a hand through Sammy's ratty hair, trying to keep her voice steady, "He has always kept them hidden from everyone. Including me."
