Beth first person pov:
Everyone has secrets, things that they don't like to share or talk about. Sometimes there'll be one person who they tell and confide in, sometimes not. Margot neither told me nor has lied to me about her secrets, but I've learned and seen enough not to need her to say the words out loud.
If she ever asked me, there isn't one thing I wouldn't do for her, no one I wouldn't hide her from, but I know her head and how she thinks, I know that the choice isn't really hers. So I'll play along and do what I can where we are. I'll be her friend. But if she ever asked, I'd get her the hell away from where she is.
-
Margot freezes and seizes up. Her too narrow shoulderblades sharpen into points as her arms come around herself and her shallow chest caves in. Her right hand is shaking as she curls her fingers into a fist and folds her arms over her pounding chest. And her eyes are wild with terror as she turns her head.
No more than four feet away stands a guy who's staring at her like she's the only person left on the earth, like none of the rest of us exist at all. With a start, I recognize him as one of the idols from last night's concert, as Jimin from bts. But I'm even more surprised when I glance down at his right hand and see a rose tattoo on his ring finger, a mirror to Margot's.
sh*t.
Jacqueline and Kate stare both at him and at Margot, glancing between the two of them: one struck speechless, the other terrified into silence. And that's when I realize exactly who they are: soulmates, soulmates to two of the other guys sitting at a table in the back of the café.
And Margot is...
Park Jimin opens his mouth to say something, taking the smallest most tentative steps toward her, when someone else's footsteps register in my head, and I glance sideways to see him coming from the bathroom.
My hand reacts on its own and latches onto my soulmate's wrist. Mayla looks at me and then follows my eyes. Understanding flashes in her eyes and then, swift as a rabbit she darts over to his side and turns his back to us while she snaps out an irrelevant question.
Margot notices. Her head turns to her boyfriend's back and Mayla, who shoots me a warning look from over his shoulder. Margot's shoulders start to shake with panic, and my eyes dart back to Park Jimin who immediately gets a concerned look on his face; questions in his eyes.
Jacqueline and Kate too, look amongst Margot, Park Jimin, and where Mayla ran off too, who she's with, and then back to me. I see questions in my old friend's eyes, but I give her a subtle shake of my head, and Jacqueline nods.
Margot spins around putting her soulmate and her boyfriend to her back and faces me. I can see a flash of hurt and yet more questions in the idol's eyes, but I dismiss them as I take in the look in my best friend's eyes.
Ever since I've known her, Margot has never been known to ask for things. If she could do them herself or do without them, then that was enough for her, so I never pushed. Even if it was on things I knew weren't good for her, thing's she knew she didn't want, it was her decision. But the only reason I've gotten this far and not interfered was by promising myself that I wouldn't do a thing until she asked me for it.
And now, looking into my friend's glazed eyes, I see the desperation, the panic, and the question. I see her ask me the question I've waited so long to hear: get me out of here.
Not sparing the world another glance, I step forward, wrap my arm around my friend and steer her toward the door. Mayla, I know, will grab our things and meet us someplace after she handles... him. But before we get to the door, I look back over my shoulder and meet Jacqueline in the eyes.
I'll call you. I mouth to her. She nods and reaches out for the idol who stares open-mouthed, words unspoken, at his fleeing soulmate.
I turn my head back around, tighten my grip on my trembling friend, and together we walk through the doors and out onto the sunny streets of Paris.
