Her first person pov:

When I was a little girl, I would beg my father to take me to the Bridge of the Archbishopric to watch the water flow past and listen to the Notre Dame bells at the hour. I preferred to go early and hear the great resounding bells in the morning air, and though my parents tried to get me to listen to other hourly bells that were much closer to our house, the Notre Dame bells were always my favorite.

Sometimes I still go. When it's past 18:00 and I'm in the area, I'll stop and wait to hear them. But sometimes, when I need to rid the sound of chimes ringing from my head, I'll wake up early and go to the bridge to hear the bells sing. Now I always go alone.

We step inside the café. Instantly my nose is flooded with the sweet smells of pastries and fresh coffee that makes my mouth water despite the rocky feeling in my stomach. But I'm used to it.

Just before my eyes can glance around the room, he starts leading me away toward a table off to the side and I peer around his tall frame to spot Beth's back sitting in a chair facing away from us, another occupied chair next to hers.

"I'm glad to see you're alive after the night you two had last night." he says by way of greeting, stepping around Beth's chair and sliding into another across from them.

"Screw you, it was the best night of my life." Beth smiles and he winks at her as she gets up to hug me.

"I'm glad it was worth the money." I smile as I slide into a seat next to him.

"It was more than worth it. I've never had so much fun." Mayla grins and turns her eyes up at the ceiling as she remembers.

"Too bad you couldn't come." Beth sighs at me.

"It's fine. I'm sure some other person enjoyed it much more than I would have and that's enough for me." I shrug my shoulders but one of my straps falls down my shoulder and I reach a hand to pull it back up.

"Besides, she had to stay at home with me." He jokes from beside me and drapes an arm over my shoulders.

"Don't start on that." Beth narrows her eyebrows at him and Mayla and I both chuckle and glance between the two of them sitting across from each other. "I'm sure your big boy self would have lived through a night without your girlfriend."

"I'm sorry, isn't this coming from the person who ditched an entire two weeks' worth of classes just because her girlfriend was ill?" He asks back and I catch a smirk grow on his face as Beth frowns.

"She wasn't sick, her arm was broken and she needed help!" Beth says back and places a deliberate hand on Mayla's knee, who gives me a 'they are aware we're still here right?' look and I shake my head with a smile and shoot her a 'not a chance' look. Mayla rolls her eyes and I smile before tuning back into the conversation.

"Let's not forget when Mayla went to the store to buy milk and you literally missed her so much you had to call her until she got back." he says and Beth shrugs mid eye-roll.

"I was bored okay?!? It wasn't a clingy thing!"

"The store was down the street!" he points out and I bite my lip to keep from laughing.
