While they had become a rare thing that the team certainly didn't see enough of anymore you did still occasionally have a quiet day at the BAU. This happened to be one of those days where you found yourself with no urgent cases to rush off to or profiles to deliver leaving everyone on desk work, catching up on the paperwork you'd left to build up for works and finally finding a well-earned rest from chasing down unsubs. The atmosphere in the bullpen was surprisingly enjoyable as everyone finally slowed down taking time to chat about their own lives over coffee in between casefiles. Even Garcia had emerged from her Batcave to grab some coffee and was now perched on the edge of Morgan's desk to talking to him and JJ. Reid sat at the desk next to you with his nose buried in a book while you worked your way through the paperwork from your last case.
The only agents missing from the bullpen were Hotch and Rossi, both of them hiding themselves away in their offices while they worked only occasionally joining you to refill their mugs of coffee. It just so happened that Hotch's office was the sole focus of your attention for the past ten minutes, your paperwork forgotten about as you played with your pen instead having completely lost your train of thought. The blinds in his office were open giving you a clear view into his office from your own desk.
He was leaning over his desk the concentration clear on his face as he poured over the paperwork in front of him. You could tell every time he stopped to reread something he wasn't happy with, watching the way his eyebrows would furrow together or he'd simply pause to take a sip of his coffee before continuing.
"Why don't you just go talk to him?" You'd almost forgotten there were other people still in the room with you, the sudden sound of Emily's voice right next to your ear making you jump out of your skin as your pen clattered to the desk. You were so caught up in your own thoughts that you failed to notice Emily slowly wheeling her own chair over from her desk behind you.
"Christ Em! A little warning next time please." You scolded hoping she didn't notice the slight shake in your voice as you tried to regain your composure. You quickly glanced around making sure no one else had noticed your reaction or could overhear the conversation you were bound to have with Emily now. When you looked over your shoulder and your gaze landed on Emily she was grinning widely at you. You were pretty sure her only purpose was to torment you about your crush.
"Not my fault you got so caught up in drooling over our boss." She teased as she tilted her head towards Hotch's office. Obviously, she was very aware of where your attention had been previously. You let out an indignant gasp at her comment and smacked lightly at her arm giving her an offended look.
"I was not!" Your argument sounded weak even to your own ears and the rest of your speech died in your throat as Emily simply raised an eyebrow at you in response. You were well aware that your pining over Aaron Hotchner was no secret to your friends at the BAU, after all, it was going on for months now and there was only so long you could hide it. The courage to tell him how you felt about him never seemed to surface no matter how long you waited for it. "Okay I might have been staring but there was certainly no drooling involved."
"I mean seriously though, what is the worst that could happen if you just took the jump and told him how you feel about him? At this point, you're just tormenting yourself." Emily asked and you could hear the slight concern in her voice. She'd told you countless times before that she just wanted you to be happy in your decision and she didn't think you could do that until you were honest with Hotch.
"Oh I don't know, just off the top of my head he could laugh at me, or outright reject me, or lecture me on how professionally inappropriate that would be, or in general he could hear me admit I like him." You rambled listing off every option on your fingers. They were only some of the top worst-case scenarios your mind had come up with every time you allowed yourself to entertain the idea of confessing your feelings to Hoth. Not wanting to tell him had never been the reason you stayed quiet, not at all, you wanted to get it all out and be honest with him but the part of your brain that constantly told you that he couldn't possibly feel the same way about you wouldn't let you.
