You let out a frustrated sigh and threw the dress in your hand back down onto the bed for the third time tonight as you grabbed your other option. You held it up in front of you, looking at your reflection in the mirror and decided to just go for it. If you spent any longer doubting your outfit choices you'd end up late and that was the last thing you wanted. The red dress had been your first choice, it matched the bold lip colour you'd chosen and it was a personal favourite of yours but the black felt classier and more fitting for tonight. It was a fitted design, perfectly highlighting every curve of your body and it was longer falling past your knees. The material was soft under your fingers as you smoothed out any creases.
The first thought to cross your mind was that it was more fitting for dinner with your boss and you had to push the thought away, reminding yourself that this wasn't a dinner with your boss, this was a date with Hotch. This was the night you'd been daydreaming about more times than you were willing to admit. Part of you still couldn't believe this was actually finally happening even as you checked yourself over once more in the mirror, adding the finishing touches to your hair and makeup. You'd put a lot of effort into your outfit and you just hoped it was enough, it had been a while since you put this much effort into a date.
You were slipping on your heels when you heard a loud knock at your front door ring through the house and you took a quick glance at the clock next to your bed confirming that it was seven o'clock on the dot. You should have known Hotch would be exact about his timing when he was the same way in the office. You hurried down to the hall and stopped with your hand on the door handle, taking in one final deep breath to calm your nerves before you pulled open the door.
Hotch was standing on the steps outside your house looking around curiously at the plants you had scattered around your door and you felt your heart skip a beat in your chest. He was wearing a sleek black suit and while you saw this man in a suit every single day that you worked with him this one was more fitted and he'd left behind his usual white shirt and tie in favour of a black shirt with a few open buttons.
"Hi." You blurted your ability to form a sentence failing as you stared out at him. You laughed at your own nervousness and tried to gather your composure again as Hotch finally looked up and met your gaze.
"Hello." He smiled, you could sense he was nervous too but he was more collected and put together than you, his attitude helping to put you at ease now that you were face to face with him. You were so focused on your own thoughts and taking in his outfit that you failed to noticed that his hand was hidden behind his back until he pulled out a bouquet of flowers. It was a bouquet of deeply coloured red roses wrapped up in brown paper and tied off with a piece of twine.
"You brought me flowers?" You gasped reaching out to take the bouquet from his hands. You brought them up to your nose and inhaled deeply, briefly closing your eyes as you smiled at the rich scent. It warmed your heart to see Hotch taking your date so seriously and really putting in the effort to impress you.
"Good first impression and all that." Hotch chuckled clearly happy with your reaction to the flowers and the sound make your stomach flip in the best way possible.
"Well consider me impressed, please, come in for a minute while I put these in some water." You stepped back and let Hotch inside, leaving him to wait in the hallway while you quickly disappeared into the kitchen.
You took an empty vase from your window sill and filled it up with water before placing it in the middle of your kitchen island. You carefully put the flowers in and stood back to admire them once more. You couldn't help but smile to yourself at the thought of having a reminder of this night and of Hotch every time you walked into your kitchen. It was only when you made your way back out to join Hotch and watched him taking in as much of your house as he could from your hallway that you realised you'd never had him over to your house before. You'd had most of the team over but anytime you spent time with Hotch outside of work it tended to be dinner at some restaurant with the whole team.
