The slight thump of what seemed to be his heart, woke the Cameron boy. His eyes peeled open only to reveal darkness. The unknown presence in the room soon becoming known when the cloudiness fogging his vision dissipated. His eyes averted to the young girl laying next to him, only seen by the sliver of moonlight, shining in through the curtains. The warmth of her body entangled with his, his arms wrapped around her, setting fire to the boys skin. When she had came into his room, slipping under the sheets with him, didn't matter, as a new wave of emotions washed over him.

He looked down at the girl in her peaceful slumber, her chest rising and falling every few seconds creating an angelic rhythm and sound as small breaths escaped from her lips.

He admired the way her eyes fluttered and her rosy lips parted. He noticed the bandages covering her gorgeous face, causing anger to shoot through his chest. He was mad that someone could do this to her, but then again he was mad at himself.. for feeling this way about the girl he once hated. The girl that he blamed for breaking their close bond as children.

Although, he wanted to continue his sparkled trail of hatred for the girl, after seeing the way she cried in his arms, and fell to him for comfort in those vulnerable moments earlier that night, he couldn't anymore.

Seeing as even though she pulled away from his attempted kiss that night, he couldn't be mad at her, only himself.

Mad at himself for taking advantage of Callas precious, but beaten soul. The cries for help that left her lips that night as he held her in his arms, rang in his ears, causing heartache.

The truth was, as he watched her in the calm state she was in, his mind blurred, and all he could think about was how happy it made him feel to not see a frown fallen upon her face like he had all too much recently.

Even her attempts to throw him off the path of miserly she seemed to be attached to.. with the weak smiles and sarcastic jokes, he saw right through her.

He couldn't help but see the face he used to adore..and still seemed to..as a child. Even through her silent calls for help, her sweet smile always painted across her face as they played when they were younger, shining through the pain in her eyes now. Giving him hope that he could fix her, and see that pure smile once again.

Even if he needed fixing himself, maybe he could fix the gaping whole in him by freeing Calla of the chains that held her down. But that selfish thought never once crossed his mind, as all he could think about was protecting Calla Whitlock.

What would people think of his unusual actions? He didn't know, nor care.

He felt like a purpose, the one he always searched for in himself, had been revealed as he stared at the girl in awe. She was strong, he knew that, but that didn't take away from the fact that he was going to be there for her.

As he continued to flicker his gaze between her beautiful features, something more washed over him.

And he knew from then on, he was going to do everything in his power to protect Calla, and never let her feel the pain she had that night, ever again.

He was willing to protect her at all costs.

short and sweet <3

this ones short bc I'm trying to focus in on the significance of his feelings towards Calla, and how his demeanor has changed.

I hope you all are doing amazing and I wish the best for you all. I really mean that.

I also just want to put it out there that I am not trying to make Drew Starkey uncomfortable in any way. All things expressed in this book are Rafe Cameron.

Im also trying to make the chapters more organized so I hope you like it.

xoxo emma
