Stephen Strange had once looked upon 14,000,605 outcomes for the final battle against Thanos. He had told Tony Stark that he had only seen one outcome where they one. In reality, there had been two. The first: Tony Stark snapped his fingers and made his sacrifice. The second: Amelia Stark had stopped him.
The Avengers defeated Thanos. Tony Stark was the hero that saved the world and the universe. His sister did not take that away from him. She only took the sacrifice, sparing his life in place of her own. In this final moment, she was a hero to none but her brother.
Her death had shaken everyone. Amelia had loved so many people and had loved them fiercely. Because of it, she left behind so many small parts of her in each of their hearts that it was almost like she wasn't gone at all.
Steve Rogers returned to the past. He lived the life he was always meant to live with Peggy. From a distance, he watched the Stark siblings grow up. He watched Amelia become the woman he knew her to be. He had to watch her death be reported worldwide all over again. He found peace, though, in knowing that she would be happy that he was happy.
Thor Odinson journeyed into space once more. He wouldn't admit it to anyone, but he was hit so hard by her death. She had been his best friend. However, he didn't go back to New Asgard and wallow in self-pity once more. She would want better for him. So he became an Asgardian of the Galaxy. Before he left Earth, he said a prayer for Amelia, hoping that she would find glory in Valhalla.
Wanda Maximoff had lost everything. First her love, Vision, then her mother figure, Amelia. She would go on to cause chaos in the world for many people, unintentionally hurting them but eventually discovering her true potential. Amelia had always believed in her. As the Scarlet Witch embraced her true self, she found the hole in her heart being filled with a familiar warmth of fire.
Tony Stark had never meant for his sister to die in his place. She had been right. He had a family. They needed him. But he needed her. And now she was gone. He went back to his retired life with an emptiness in his heart, not unlike the one he had felt when she had first left Earth some seven years previous. Except, now, it was permanent.
Amelia had left a letter for him. It was like she knew what she was going to do before she even did it. To be fair, Tony had prerecorded messages to be played to his family should he have died. But she had stopped him because she knew him better than he knew himself.
'Tony,
I know something bad is about to happen. I don't know how I know. It's a gut feeling. I've always been good with those. It feels like my fire is extinguishing. This is my final fight. And make no mistake, there is a fight coming.
I hope I'm wrong about this, that we can simply snap our fingers and everything will return to normal. It's never that easy though. If it should turn out that I do, in fact, die... there are some things that need to be said.
First of all, I'm sorry for how our lives turned out. I have many regrets from these last 13 years since we became Iron Man and Inferno. My biggest was leaving you behind after the Avengers broke up. In truth, we needed each other, then. I wouldn't have cared if I was locked in a cell as long as I still had you. But I was a coward, and I left. Perhaps if I hadn't, events wouldn't have led to this.
When I adopted mom's words of "everything is impossible until someone discovers it's not", I meant it every time I said them. We have faced impossible things, but with you at my side, Tony, they always seemed possible. You've given me hope. You've given me strength. You've given me life. The least I could do was return the favour. Please go live it.
I want you to tell Morgan every day that Auntie Lia loves her. Let her take care of Theseus. I know how much she loves him. And you love him too, even though you hate to admit it. Besides you, Morgan is the best thing in my life. And I hope after today, she can live in a better world than we did.
You were always the best to me though, Tony. If I was the fire, you were the match that set me off. You are the reason I became who I am today. You are everything to me. So, while you tell Morgan every day that I love her, you tell yourself the same thing.
I love you, Anthony. Don't you ever forget it.
Forever in your heart,
Amelia Maria Stark.
Ames.'There were no words to express the feeling. Tony Stark grieved, but he had to keep on living. She had told him to, so he would. And he did. He gave his daughter, his wife, their dog and himself the best life he could in her memory. He kept on living with her in his heart.
"Part of the journey is the end."
