duty

Remus was sitting in the library, occupied with his defense against the dark arts homework when his friend entered and made his way towards him.

"Hey moon boy."

Remus smiled without looking up because only one person ever calls him that.

"Hey pads, what is it." He asked and looked up briefly.

"Just wanted to check up on you since I haven't seen you in like- three hours and I thought it wouldn't be healthy to do homework this long."

Remus chuckled.

"Don't worry, I'm almost done. Sit with me?" He asked and Sirius nodded, smiling.

He sat down next to him closer than necessary but neither of them really cared.
He smelled like peppermint gum and remus' mind got fuzzy on the smell because it was just so... Sirius.

"James wanted to do a new prank soon, do you have any ideas?"

Remus let out a quiet laugh and looked down at Sirius who now had his head on his shoulder.
"Didn't you say doing homework this long couldn't be healthy? It's going to take even longer when you distract me."

Sirius smiled sheepishly and shrugged.
"Just want to talk to you."

Remus put his hand in Sirius' hair and started stroking it softly.
"Let's talk about that later."

Sirius hummed in response and leant into the touch.

Remus really tried to concentrate but with Sirius cuddling into him it wasn't that easy.
It took him a bit longer to finish his work than usual but when he started to pack up his stuff Sirius immediately reacted and helped him so it would go faster.

They left the library together and remus almost fainted when their hands brushed together.

That tended to happen more often than not recently.
Soft touches then and there, compliments rolled off their tongues more easily and they eyes met across the room without them even realizing.

It always sent a buzzing feeling through his body because sometimes he allowed himself to believe that Sirius may return his feelings.
It wasn't even that unlikely to be true, remus knew how to read the signs, but he didn't want to have false hope nonetheless.

He watched Sirius from the corner of his eye as he slowly brushed their hands together again to get his reaction.
He just smiled lightly and looked at his shoes and before remus realized he was grabbing his hand.
He slowly intertwined their fingers and his heart started to beat faster.

Their hands swung back and forth between them as they walked back to the dorms.

Remus was planning their next prank just like he always did and his thoughts wandered to Sirius.
He looked out of the window and down the school grounds where some students were walking in groups and the birds were flying around.
When he looked down at his notes he realized that he subconsciously paired himself with Sirius even tho it didn't even make sense.
He got annoyed with himself but just left it like it was.

Sirius came down the stairs into the common room and flopped down the sofa next to remus.

"What'ya doing?" He said leaning in and taking up even more space between them.

Remus put an arm behind his back before he answered.

"Planing the new prank since I'm the only one who considers every possible scenario."

Sirius just hummed, understanding and read over the plan.

"You're the smartest." He said before giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
Remus eyes widened in surprise but he didn't get the chance to say anything before jame and Peter walked towards them.

When they too read over the plan, James shot remus a quick, knowing look but didn't comment on it.
They all agreed and talked about some details.
They sat closely together and played a game of exploding snap as everyone started to get into their dorm rooms.

When they were alone they left through the portrait hole and partet ways so everything went as planned.

Sirius and remus kept the map because they were the ones to look out for prefects and teachers and the other two had the invisibility cloak.
They kept an eye out for Peter and James on the map to make sure they reached the destination and while they set up the prank, Remus and Sirius started a conversation.

It didn't take long before they saw someone coming closer in another corridor and Sirius took his hand and started to run before they were seen. He quickly pulled remus into an empty classroom.

Remus' heart was beating like crazy. Normally he was on prank-duty alone and could tell everyone he was doing his prefect job if he got caught but that wouldn't have worked with Sirius.

"Well that was fun." Sirius said and remus kept a hand over his beating heart.
"I'm never putting me and you on duty together again." Remus said and sat down on a desk.

"Why did you anyways?" Sirius wondered.

"Huh?"

"Put me and you on duty. You've never done that before."

"I- don't know... I wanted to be alone with you?" It sounded more like a question than an answer and remus silently cursed himself for saying that.

Sirius just chuckled and and came closer.
"Next time just say that, maybe ask me out on a date or something, like a normal person would. We don't want you to have another heart attack again, do we?"

"I- what?"

Sirius laughed and turned around.

"Come on let's find the others, they're probably searching for us already."

Before he reached the doors remus sprung into action and grabbed the other boy's hand.

"Are you serious?"

"I'm always Sirius." He grinned.

Remus rolled his eyes.
"No like- I mean yeah of course but, you know what I mean. Would you really go on a date with me?"

Sirius shrugged and nodded.
"Of course moony, I really like you."
He said shyly and remus came a step closer.

"I really like you too." The taller boy responded and leaned down slowly.

Before anything happened though, James burst into the room and paused for a moment, panting.

"I'm really sorry guys but McGonagall is coming our way and she's furious, you have all the time to snog in detention if she catches us."

They shared a look and started running behind their best friend, their fingers linked together tightly.
