Chapter 7: The Companion

It was almost evening; everyone else in the guild went back to their dormitories, apartments, or whatever place they stay. Lucy ambled her way to the apartment she was staying in. Plue was accompanying her, watching her every step like a child.

                “Hey Plue, I think Natsu was a bit weird back there,” Lucy said as she stopped in an intersection/alleyway.

                “Fu fu,” was the only reply she got from Plue. But it didn’t matter to her. At the very least, she thought, she had a friend to open up to.

Lucy only gave Plue a faint chuckle, and then she cradled the little creature in her arms like a baby. The blonde mage was troubled. She can’t just forget about Natsu and that girl, Heidi, even for a second. She can’t; it might be impossible, she thought, since Natsu is her---

Why are you thinking like that Lucy?

 Lucy broke away from her daydream.

Snap out of it!! Why are being so overprotective on Natsu?

Lucy’s eyes widened when an idea struck her like a blazing arrow. Her face became hot, she went red.

There’s no way in the world that it’ll happen.

The celestial mage thought.

He’s a good friend; of course, I would only want the best for him.

The explanation was able to convince her—somehow. But she was still flushing, no doubt. She squeezed Plue in her arms and exclaimed, “That’s right!!!”

                “Hey, Lucy!!” A deep voice interrupted.

                The blonde lady was totally startled by the sudden intervention. She looked at the back where the voice was coming from, and there she saw the ice mage, Gray Fullbuster.

                “You gave me a shock, Gray!” Lucy said, hitting the blue-haired mage on his shoulder.

                “Really? Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” Gray said.

                Lucy smiled on the ground. “It’s okay,” she murmured. She was relieved that nothing changed after the commotion inside the guild. Her relationship with her teammates hasn’t changed, it seems.

                “Why are you so quiet, all of a sudden,” Gray commented as he took Plue from Lucy. She only smiled at the young man, and continued to walk.

They chatted along the way, and stopped in a shop. They ordered drinks, two shogun burgers and a plate of dango. After taking their orders, they settled themselves in a seat right beside the glass window. The sky has turned crimson, and the sun could be barely seen. The scenery was picturesque, indeed.

The mages started consuming their food. While eating, Gray suddenly opened a serious talk with Lucy.

“Hey, Lucy,” he started.

“Yesh?” Lucy answered before swallowing a big piece of burger.

“I think Natsu’s acting a bit strange a while ago,” he said.

“You sound so sure about it,” Lucy uttered, looking at Gray.

Gray didn’t respond. He placed his food back to the plate and took a sip of his drink. He gave a long and loud sigh after gulping the beverage. He put the glass back to the table and stared at it. Lucy, seated on the opposite side of the young man, gazed at him while she’s holding her glass.

“Hey Lucy,” the ice wizard said, startling the lady in front of him. “Do you know where Happy is?”

“Oh, right!!” Lucy exclaimed, as she put down the beverage in full force and stood up. “I forgot to ask him about it!!!”

The people in the shop were surprised by Lucy’s out-of-the-blue actions. Realizing this, the blonde mage felt really embarrassed. She sat down quietly and emptied the glass in just one swallow. It was quite amazing in a way or two, Gray thought.

“You also noticed, huh?” Gray said.

“Of course I would,” Lucy cried. “Every day that cat would bother me over something so trivial, sometimes, he’d tease me unexpectedly, give outrageous comments and--- and---“

Lucy stopped realizing the next thought that appeared inside her mind. She was bemused about the idea.

“Gray!” Lucy yelled as she stood from the seat.

Gray nodded in response. The two fairytail mages left the shop in a hurry.

What could’ve happened?
