Ellie was seated on the rooftop, her coffee cup in hand.

January had arrived and she had gone back to work.

It was cold, really cold. She was buried in a big coat, her cheeks and nose pink from the cold.

Still, she liked the chilly weather.

Ellie heard the door of the rooftop open and smiled unconsciously.

James seated next to her, a grin on his face.

"You missed me, I suppose," he said.

"Don't get your hopes up, Barnes" she replied.

"Well," he grinned, "I missed you a lot. No one here talks about planes like you do"

Ellie let out a hearty laugh, "you missed my ramble on planes? I do not believe that"

He shrugged, "how were the festivities?" he asked.

"Good... yeah, good" she said, "what about you?"

James smiled, "well, we definitely had a great time"

"Let me guess, you used your amazing abilities to sneak out..."

"Yes," he said.

"And brought alcohol?"

He chuckled, "I won't lie to you, Lane. So, yes"

"Did someone catch you?"

"Yeah, and they joined the party"

Ellie laughed, "did you end up with a headache?"

"I didn't" he said and looked at Ellie, "but I'm guessing you did"

"I..." Ellie looked at him, "possibly"

"Definitely?" he grinned.

"Definitely" she repeated.

He laughed again and Ellie shook her head.

"How old are you?" he asked a moment later.

"Right. You don't know that" she said, mostly to herself.

"I don't know anything about you," James said nonchalantly, but Ellie felt the pain in his words.

"I'm nineteen" she said.

"You're nineteen and have a college degree in engineering?" he asked, not bewildered, because he was aware Ellie was the most intelligent person he knew. But still, it was a shock when he thought about it.

"Yeah" she nodded.

James was about to speak but shivered, "I hate the cold," he murmured.

"Well, you shouldn't," Ellie said as she unwrapped her scarf and handed it to him, "here, I refuse to bear on my conscience that you got sick when I could have prevented it."

He was beginning to refuse, to say she would be cold, but she placed a kiss on his cheek. That seemed to shut him up.

At the moment, Ellie didn't think much about it, "put it on and don't complain"

"Yes ma'am" he said, his cheeks red but voice as calm as it ever was.

"You kissed him!" Lori exclaimed that night at dinner, it was a Monday.

They always had dinner on Mondays.

"I pecked him on the cheek" Ellie mumbled nervously, "I don't know why I did it" she stood up and paced, "really, it was just a peck on the cheek. Like, an unconscious and not at all planned peck on the cheek"

"Totally unplanned," said Lori, smirking.

"And friendly!" Ellie said, "yeah, it was definitely friendly"

"Totally friendly" nodded Lori, but her smile was of amusement, "now tell me, how did he react?"

"What?" Ellie said and placed her fingers on the bridge of her nose, "I didn't notice!"

"You are a complicated one" Lori took a breath.

"Hey!" complained Ellie as she took a seat again, "I am not complicated! I am the opposite of complicated, really"

"Sure thing, darling" smiled Lori knowingly, "sure thing"
