~I. The Lesson~
"Anissa! Derek! Time to go to lessons!" The woman's voice echoed throughout the small cottage, awakening two young children- one of twelve and another of fourteen. Their cat-like ears perked up at the familiar sound of their mother's voice. Anissa, the fourteen year old, was the first to rise. She climbed from her bed, brushing her long brown hair back with her fingers. Her tribe was very strict on regulations, even more do than the larger-tribes. Sighing, the fourteen year old prodded her younger sibling.
"Derek, wake up. We have lessons today," she purred into his ear, attempting to wake him up. He stirred slightly, but did not wake up. Anissa sighed, shoving him off his bed, flicking her ginger tail in triumph. "Wake up you fatuus," she snorted, folding her arms in front of her chest. Derek blinked before opening his bright blue eyes.
"I am not a fatuus," he retorted, climbing to his feet. She stuck her tongue out at him and pulled out her hairbrush.
"Sure, bardus," she teased, brushing her hair with a smirk on her face.
"Anissa, do not call your brother stupid!" Their mother snapped.
"Whatever, mom. Who do we have today?" The brunette inquired. Derek was in his corner, quickly combing his bright blonde hair and changing into his uniform.
"Science. Miss Kaida is going to help you out, Anissa." The girl nodded, quickly slipping on her uniform polo shirt and khaki sweater. She slipped off her nightskirt and put on her pants, careful to put her tail through the tail-hole. "What're you doing?! You're supposed to wear a skirt!"
"Mother, I've told you, I hate skirts. All of my mentors have agreed to let me wear pants. Shut up already!" Anissa snapped, pulling her hair into a high ponytail. Now finished getting ready, the girl stepped out of her home, skipping breakfast. She scanned the camp clearing for her mentor's noticeable dotted ears. Almost instantly, she spotted her, and raced through the crowd of students towards her. "Miss Kaida! Miss Kaida!" She called, nearly tripping over her own feet. The young maiden turned towards Anissa and smiled.
Kaida Tsunemori was a twenty-three year old neko with long, straight black hair and white ears. Her tail was black, but her ears were spotted grey. A year ago she had come to Texas from the Clan Of Rising Sun, a large clan in Japan. She was kind and loved to tell stories of her childhood in a large Clan. The she smiled upon seeing her student. "Hello, Jay. It's nice to see you all ready."
"It's a rare sight," Anissa joked. Kaida chuckled. "So what're we learning about today?" She inquired.
"We're going to study erodils. They're a flower that have the same appearance as daffodils, only they have more dangerous qualities. The land around your camp is full of them, especially around this time of year, so I decided it would be appropriate to teach you about them." Anissa nodded.
"Sounds interesting," she commented as they began leaving camp towards the field.
"They are. I also heard that Keith's mentor is taking him out for erodil lessons as well," Kaida mentioned, wiggling her eyebrows. Anissa blushed. Keith was her best friend and crush. Besides Larissa, her other friend who had been banished a year ago, Keith was the only one who knew she could not smell- anosmia, as she found out it was called.
"Oh, hush you," she hissed jokingly, smacking the elder's arm. Kaida chuckled before leading her outside camp. It was an odd sensation- being outside the village. Rarely anybody was allowed to leave, and when it was, it was hardly for educational purposes. Soon enough, they reached a field of daffodils. Kaida stopped walking, and turned to the younger girl, preparing to start the lesson.
