By the time everyone in the house was settled in and comfortable it was time for dinner, which would be a task in itself considering she is cooking for nine instead of two.
The whole group was sitting out in the backyard in plastic white chairs watching Tony and Steve chop wood to make a fire outside so they could all eat together under the stars once it got colder. The air outside was filled with laughter and a strange sense of comfort that Tyla missed terribly.
Realizing the time Tyla stood from her seat still listening to Thor who was telling one of the many stories that in some way included Loki stabbing him, she took another step this time onto her plastic chair and placed her fingers in the front of her mouth and let out a loud whistle. All of the men's attention turned to her.
"Listen here losers...Tonight I'm sorry but for dinner all I have to offer is bangers and mash. I would have been more prepared but someone didn't tell me you were coming" she explained rolling her head to face Peter who had already shrunk down into his chair blushing.
"Bangers and what?" Bruce asked clearly very confused. Tyla looked around and he wasn't the only one who looked lost. Everyone did, except Thor which was definitely a first from what she had seen.
"Waiit I know what that is...I KNOW WHAT THAT ISSSS" Thor boomed seriously proud of himself
Tyla couldn't help but chuckle at the team's confusion and Thor's antics,
"Bangers and mash?" she tried again, but still no luck. "You know sausages and mashed potatoes...?" this statement caused questioning looks to fall upon the woman standing on the chair.
"Why would one give a normal food such a name?" Loki asked
"It's an Australian thing, you learn not to question it" Peter answered before Tyla had a chance to speak up. The answer Peter gave seemed to please the group as they all nodded and turned back to whatever they were previously doing.
With that settled Tyla made her way inside shoving her headphones in her ears and back up to full volume to get into the right mood to tackle the monster of a project that cooking for them all was going to be.
In her own world, Tyla was chopping veggies to the beat of her extremely loud music when she felt a pair of hands grab her shoulders firmly, out of pure instinct she turned quickly and threw her knife in the direction that the arms had come from. She turned just quick enough to see the tall masculine figure behind her shift to the side narrowly avoiding the blade.
"Jesus doll we have to stop meeting like this" the body behind her spoke with a slight chuckle. Right then she knew she had just attacked Bucky for the third time in twelve hours.
"Well, you need to start learning not to sneak up on a girl when she can't hear or see you" Tyla replied ripping her headphones from her ears with the smallest amount of anger in her words,
"Yeah your probably right." he started shoving his hands into his pockets, "Well I came to see if I could lend you a hand" he continued
"Nah I should be fine here thanks James" She responded earning herself a puzzled look down from Bucky, she couldn't help but notice how far she had to look up to meet his gaze or how much wider his body was than hers, his muscly figure could easily wrap her up and hide her from everything around her.
"You are cooking for a lot of people, it would be quicker if I helped and you know it Tyla" he continued, pulling her from further inappropriate thoughts by placing both of his hands back on her shoulders.
"Since when do you call me Tyla?" she questioned having been caught off guard by the use of her real name,
"Since you called me James" he replied. Tyla immediately began laughing at the fake grumpy scowl and the whiny noise he made as he crossed his arms against his chest.
"This is not a laughing matter..." he adds attempting to stay grumpy which causes Tyla to lose it even more at how hard he was trying to remain to look grumpy,
"Okay...okay I'm sorry Bucky I take it back" she finally says once she caught her breath.
"Thankyou doll, now are you going to allow me to help, or am I going to have to figure it out by myself?" he asks grabbing the nearest apron putting it over his head, and starting to tie it around his waist,
"Well, are you a good cook?" Tyla asks watching him slightly struggle to do up the apron
"Something like that..." he says finally getting the apron tied.
"Well...I could use an extra pair of hands I guess" she decides looking at all the work she had left to do. Bucky's ears perked up in excitement at the sound of Tyla's agreement.
Tyla ushered an overly excited Bucky over to the stove, "Okay it's already on you just have to cook the sausages" she explained. Bucky hesitated, staring at the stack of sausages and the small pan in front of him. Bucky knew he couldn't cook to save his life but to help her he'd try.
"Okay now you're set with that I am going to work on the mash potatoes," she says turning away from her fellow cook to prepare the potatoes that were sitting in the sink.
Above the kitchen sink is a window that looks out onto the land at the back of the property. Tyla is taken back by the sight of all the Avengers working together to set up a place to eat together in the backyard, as she watches them they continue to work and fill the air outside with laughter and a feeling of family that she had not felt in a very long time.
"Hey doll..." Bucky broke her from her thoughts sounding unsure and nervous,
"Hmm" responded turning to face him.
"I-I uh have never used this kind of stove before..." He started but as his cheeks turned a light shade of pink Tyla knew he was lost and almost embarrassed about it.
"Oh yeah it's really old and hard to use let me show you," she replied walking over to the stove grabbing his hands to lead him and show him what to do. She not only showed him how to work the stove but also how to cook everything.
Bucky had no words to describe how in awe he was of the woman teaching him how to cook. No really went out of their way to teach him the ways of the new century...but she did.
Soon enough dinner was ready and Tyla had to admit even with having to help Bucky him being there made it faster and more enjoyable they had joked and laughed the whole time.
Once there was a portion of food set up on each plate ready for the team Tyla spun around to Bucky who was behind her absolutley beaming and placed a quick kiss on his cheek.
"Wha-what was that for doll?" he asked shocked but not mad at what she had done.
Tyla didn't reply she simply just pointed at the apron he was wearing. Bucky looked down and saw 'Kiss the cook' in big bold writing, he chuckled and wrapped his arms around her pulling her into a tight hug.
As her head hit his chest all that she could think about was the way she felt safe. You shouldn't feel like this her inner voice told her, you're letting your guard down he'll leave just as everyone else did.
