'now he's a super star'

she was right. stacey did regret it.

when maisie was walking to claudia's from school on wednesday, she got a notification on her phone.

it read: 'is this who you want babysitting your children?' and contained a link.

she pressed the link to see a video of stacey going into insulin shock, but of course she didn't know that at the time.

she continued to claudia's for the meeting, now very concerned about stacey.

when they'd all arrived. kristy watched the video again.

"stacey." she muttered. "what is this?"

stacey was sat, very upset, in chair in the centre of the room.

"come on, you have to tell us." kristy insisted. "i know. we all know, you've been hiding something all this time."

"so what is it? a nervous breakdown? a neurological misfire? hard drugs?" she questioned.

"kristy!" mary anne scolded her.

"what?" kristy asked. "the babysitters agency dug this up to discredit us. whatever it is we have a right to know."

"it's diabetes." stacey said, standing up. "i have diabetes, okay? type 1. there's no cure. i'll have it for the rest of my life."

maisie hadn't expected that, at all.

"how long have you known?" claudia asked, sympathetically.

"since last spring. " stacey replied. "i just started feeling weird. i lost a bunch of weight. my mom thought i had an eating disorder. she took me to a psychiatrist, and, in the meantime, i just kept getting sicker and sicker, till. well until what yo7 just saw."

"but why have you been lying to us?" kristy asked.

"because i was afraid." stacey replied. " i thought if you knew, that's all you'd see me as."

"the sick girl."

"stacey." mary anne interjected, sympathetically.

"that video was the worst day of my life. and even my best friend laine sent it around." she explained. "they commented on it and made sure that every private school kid in manhattan saw it at least once."

"what a bunch of jerks." claudia said.

"i just assumed you'd all want to laugh at me too." stacey added.

"stacey, we would never." claudia told her.

"never." mary anne added.

"of course we wouldn't." maisie smiled.

"absolutely not. are you crazy?" kristy asked. "or your blood sugar's just dropping."

"too soon." claudia snapped.

"how do you know about that?" stacey asked, still teary.
