Sleeping was never something Barbatos particularly enjoyed. His dreams were always so vivid and lifelike, he's almost convinced himself that he just accidentally traveled to another timeline while he was sleeping. And knowing all too well that it could become a reality if he wasn't careful enough, it was quite tiresome, to say the least.
But what he dreaded the most was the nightmares.
No matter how many years, decades, or centuries passed, it was always hard for Barbatos to get a good night's rest without feeling paranoid when he woke up. It was both a blessing and a curse to have his powers.
These dreams and nightmares had gotten slightly better whenever you stayed over at the castle and slept with Barbatos. Whenever you slept by his side, he hardly ever had dreams he was worried about and felt more relaxed in the morning. It was strange, to say the least. But of course, with the good, came the bad.
It wasn't often, but he would get particularly worrisome dreams about you. Dreams about you getting hurt or killed by demons. Mainly of the time Belphie killed you. He hadn't gotten over fully knowing that he had sent you to your death, but he knew it had to be done. It was a guilt he had to carry with him forever.
"Barbatos?" Your voice suddenly pulled him out of his thoughts.
He looked at you slightly startled as he hadn't realized you were talking to him.
"Are you okay? You've been spacing out for a while..." You frowned.
"A-Ah...my apologies...I don't know what came over me..." Barbatos mirrored your frown.
Barbatos looked around for a moment and realized that he was in his room, sitting on his bed as you were slipping into your sleepwear. He blushed a bit. How long was he spacing out?
"It's okay, Barb. What's on your mind?" You asked as you sat beside him.
You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and rested your chin on his shoulder. Barbatos instinctively rested his head on yours and sighed.
"Nothing you need to worry about, dear." Barbatos smiled.
"Hm...alright then." You said before pressing a kiss on his cheek.
You knew there was something he wasn't telling you, but knowing Barbatos, he probably just didn't want to worry you. Which only ever made you more worried...regardless, you wanted to respect his wishes and decided to change the subject.
"When Diavolo was planning this...'sleepover' did you tell him you wanted to bunk with me or was it a coincidence?" You lightly teased.
"Hm...I suppose that's something you should ask the young master." Barbatos smiled playfully.
"Oh c'mon! At least give me a hint!" You whined.
"Shh, you're going to wake someone up haha..." Barbatos chuckled. You pouted as you slumped your shoulders.
"Here...why don't we sleep now, and I'll give you a hint in the morning?" Barbatos said.
"Hm...alright. But don't give me some cryptic message or something!" You said.
Barbatos simply laughed and agreed. Once your terms were settled, Barbatos laid down and sighed. Here came the time he dreaded the most.
But of course, having you by his side made things seem a bit more hopeful for the demon. You quickly followed suit and rested your head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat as his chest rose and fell. It was like a lullaby of sorts.
