Kanao had just finished rehabilitation training with the 3 boys. She was about to go get another order from her master and older sister - Shinobu Kocho, the insect hashira- when her crow came and announced that oyakata-sama would like to see her for a mission.

She was confused because normally her crow would tell her her mission and she would follow it. Occasionally her sister would tell her to accompany her on a mission.
But oyakata-sama? He usually only gives the hashira missions.

She figured it was important so she made her way there quickly

Kanao's pov

"Oyakata-sama, I have arrived" it was rare that I spoke without flipping my coin. The only times I do it are when speaking with master and oyakata-sama.

"Ah, hello kanao, please take a seat my child" oyakata-sama spoke calmly in his usual voice.

He never let much emotion besides happiness and sometimes worry be clear in his voice. Is was soothing and calming, allowing him to tame people as aggressive as wind pillar-sama and people as passive as mist pillar-sama.

When I sat down he began to speak again

"Demons have been spotted in the Eastern empire, specifically near the royal palace. They are currently looking for guards for the empress as the former guards retired. I would like you to apply for this position. However, accepting this mission means you will be away for at least a few months, depending on how many demons there are. At most, you will stay there for a year. You dont have to accept this mission if you don't want to, my biggest concern is yours safety."

It was a lot of information to take in, but I couldn't refuse. I had studied the Eastern empire. And the other people there are quite sharp, they'll probably figure out my real mission quickly. Despite that I still couldn't refuse

"... I accept the mission, oyakata-sama"

I know he could tell I was a little hesitant but I still accepted

"Very well my child, if you wish to retreat at any point, send your crow, someone else will go and complete the mission in your place. You will leave tomorrow morning as soon as the sun rises, please pack your things and say your goodbyes now, you are dismissed"

When I arrived home I immediately came across master. She was smiling of course, bit she seemed slightly irritated, and worried

"Where were you, kanao?" Was the first thing she asked me

"Oyakata-sama summoned me for a mission" was the shortest response I could gather, when I speak without flipping my coin, I try to keep the answers short.

"Ara? Really? Did you accept? What was the mission? When are you leaving?" Master often does this when I get missions without her knowing. I usually just answer the most important ones

"It's a mission in The eastern empire to pose as the empress's bodyguard and eliminate the demons, I leave tomorrow when the sun rises" I replied, I was still smiling, but master wasn't, instead a concerned look replaced her usual smiling expression. My smile faltered a bit then soon returned.

"The eastern empire? That's a very long trip..... Do you know how long you'll be gone?" She was clearly worried.

I had never been away from home or more than a week because of a mission, not alone at least. I would usually go with her, sometimes another demon slayer and rarely another pillar.

"Oyakata-sama said it would be a few months at least, a year at most." She seemed shocked by my reply but eventually sighed and said
"Come, I'll help you pack, we can look at the rules and etiquette of the empire while we're at it" with that, her smile returned but it was different, softer and more.... Sincere?

Kanao woke up about an hour before needing to leave to get ready, eat and say by to anyone she needed to.

As she was doing her hair Sumi kiyo and Naho approached her.

Kanao's pov

"Kanao-sama?" The girls said in sync it was normal that they did that

I looked at them through the mirror, acknowledging them with a closed eye smile and continuing with my hair

"We brought you breakfast to save time! And...." The trio began. I had I feeling I knew what they were gonna say next. I smiled in thanks and waited for them to continue.

"Do you have to go!?"

"Can we come with you!?"

How long are you gonna be gone!?"

All three questions came following eachother. These were questions I had to answer, so I flipped my coin.

Heads: speak

Tails: don't speak

When the coin fell back in my hand I could already tell that it was heads. So I prepared my answer.

"This is a mission. I must go. No you can't come with me. At most I'll be gone for a year." Was the shortest answer I could give them

Before they could say anything else aoi came in saying "kanao! Hurry up! There's only 15 minutes till sunrise!"

I finished my breakfast and waved to the triplets before leaving. There was only 5minutes left until my departure.

I met master at the garden while she made sure I had everything I needed and knew the way to the Empire.

"Ara? It's already sunrise! You should get going now kanao. Have a safe trip!" Master said. But it was different then usual. The way she spoke that is. It seemed more... Real? She wasn't faking her emotions this time.

"Bye kanao! Have a safe trip!" Everyone said at the same time. The triplets were crying though.

I nodded. The last thing I said to them was "sayonara"

And I took off for my mission.
